CDC and FDA officials are warning the more than 30 million Americans who wear contact lenses of a fungal infection that could lead to permanent vision loss.

So far more than 100 cases of fusarium keratitis have been reported in soft contact lens users. A majority of the patients who reported this infection had been using Bausch and Lomb's Renu moisture loc contact lens solution.

document.write(''); That solution is now being recalled.

Experts, like Dr. Bennie Jeng with the Cleveland Clinic, say while there is an increase in cases now, it is still a relatively rare condition.

"In general contact lens related infections of the cornea being fungal related are actually very rare," Jeng says. "So the concern with this quote on quote outbreak is there's a lot people cropping up with this infection that usually doesn't show up on the radar that much."

If you are experiencing any unusual symptoms, you should contact your doctor immediately.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Bausch & Lomb has stopped shipping its ReNu brand contact lens solution after a number of people using the product reported getting a serious eye infection, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration said on Monday.

The FDA said that 109 cases of the rare but serious infection that may cause loss of vision had been reported to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) from 17 U.S. states. But the agency said during a conference call that it was not aware of a link between the infection and specific products.

Bausch & Lomb's stock was halted in afterhours trading on Monday after falling more than 9 percent to $52.12 on Inet electronic brokerage after the news. The stock had closed at $57.44 on the New York Stock Exchange.

The FDA said it had completed cases on 30 reports. Of those, 28 people wore soft contact lenses and 26 of them reported using Bausch & Lomb's ReNu brand in the month before the infection.

Five patients reported using other solutions in addition to ReNu.

The infection, caused by the Fusarium fungus, may lead to vision loss requiring corneal transplants, the FDA said.

The FDA and CDC are investigating the reported cases.

Washington, D.C. (AHN) - Shipments of ReNu MoistureLoc brand contact lens solution have been suspended as the U.S. government investigates a rare fungal outbreak among contact lens users.

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is working with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDCP) to find the cause of the outbreak, which has been linked to the ReNu solution.

According to Dr. Daniel G. Schultz, director of the FDA's Center for Devices and Radiological Health, "The data … associates the use of certain products with some of these cases in a fairly dramatic fashion."

According to the FDA, a fungus called Fusarium has been identified as the cause of the reported infections. As of April 9, 2006, 109 cases of suspected Fusarium keratitis are under investigation by CDC and public health authorities in 17 states of the U.S.

Solution maker, Bausch and Lomb has voluntarily suspended shipments while they cooperate with authorities.

The Chinese Department of Health (DOH) has asked the Taiwan branch of the U.S.-based Bausch & Lomb not to import its MoistureLoc solution for soft contact lens, although the department issued an import license in February. An official said yesterday the DOH took the move after the suspension of the sales of the ReNu MoisturLoc solution were suspended in Hong Kong, Singapore and the United States following reports suggesting that the product might be linked with an unusually high incidence of fungal infection-caused keratitis among contact lens wearers over the past several months.

Liu Li-ling, deputy DOH director-general of pharmaceutical affairs, said that although approval has been granted for sale of the product in Taiwan, it has not yet been imported.

Out of health concerns, the DOH will not consider opening the doors for the import of ReNu MoisturLoc solution until the U.S. Food and Drug Administration releases the results of its latest investigation into the safety of using the contact lens care product, Liu said.

The culprit fungus, called fusarium, is commonly found in plant material and soil in tropical and subtropical areas. Without eye drop treatment, the infection can scar the cornea and blind its victims.

A local marketing executive of Bausch & Lomb confirmed that the company has not started importing ReNu MoistureLoc solution into the island.

The product currently being marketed in Taiwan is MultiPlus contact lens solution that was manufactured with separate substances and bears an entirely different name.

The company has no plans to recall MultiPlus solution from local pharmacies and hospitals and consumers should not panic over the reports about a separate product, the executive said.

The the executive suggested consumers using the product to abide by the instructions, including thoroughly cleaning their hands with soap when putting on or taking of contact lens.

People should also regularly clean the containers for the lens and take them off when going to bed.

Just a couple of months ago, the DOH alerted consumers and hospitals in Taiwan about using the balanced salt solution (BSS) produced by another company the United States.

The commonly used solution for eye surgery was found to have been contaminated with poisonous endotoxin.
