Not sure what you're refering to. Do you have the drive shaft out?

i did have it out. it's back in now. the u-joint was ok. i was going to replace it because i had the driveshaft out.

the part of the shaft that the u-joint goes in has little pins on top and bottom. they are about an 1/8" in diameter. i thought i had to pull them out and then press or beat the u-joint out.

You were probably were seeing the plastic tips from the injected plastic retainer. I didn't realize that they were still used on u-joints. Basically, it is a cheap and reliable way to retain the bearing cups in high production, instead of various types of C-clips and snap rings. The replacement u-joint comes with the appropriate retainer.

It's been a few years since I had to replace a u-joint, let alone one with plastic retention. I understand that the method I used is not an approved procedure. There are probably instructions that can be found with a web search if you ever need to replace one.

I used a propane torch to gently heat the yoke ends with the injected plastic retainers till the plastic melted out - freeing up the U-joints to be removed.

Don't overheat the yokes with the torch - the plastic should melt out rather easily.

Don't know if this is the recommended procedure either - but it worked just fine...
