Default should have stayed stock

Well i went from stock 3.23 a4 to 3.42. richmond sportman gears. Well damn this thing HOWLS. When i am driving its not bad at all, alil lound but ok. Well when on Decell it would howl like crazy. replace all new bearning and all. I reused the stock Pinion shim and carrier shim. well have i done something wrong here. any ideas what it is.

Yes, you bought Richmond gears. Known for being noisy.

howl on decel is usually ring and pinion noise

You're not supposed to reuse the crush collar, it's a
disposable piece and you crush a new one to get the
setup fitted to the new pinion. Then you shim the
chunk for contact pattern. If you take it apart again
you might consider a hard pinion spacer & shim kit,
that is reusable and won't get beaten down with age
and abuse.

I guess I'm curious as to why you went from 3.23's to 3.42's. Not much of a difference for the price.

no sorry i used the new crush collar and all new bearings. my b/l .008 and i have the stock size shim in pinion. on Acell its ok, slight i mean slight whine. but on decell it howls like a mad dog. when up on the lift and put in gear the rear has a howl that comes and goes, also when driving it howls as u give a slight amount of throttle.

Can't speak for him, but I did the same ratio swap on mine
(but stock GM gears) when I went to the T-2R since that
was a total pull-apart deal anyway.
