The Helm manuals are more than worth the dough, to me.
Now another short-term-cheaper option is AllDataDIY, a
subscription service that has as part of it the manuals
online. But I find the paper books and Post-It notes for
tabs beat the hell out of online / on-screen documents
(unless you have Ethernet in the garage, like). I got the
3-volume standard set plus the engine and transmission
blue manuals (never cracked those, yet).

Yes, in addition to diagrams, the manuals have step-by-step diagnostic procedures and illustrated repair instructions.
