Default 500 RWHP or am I in for a big disappointment?

I hate to bench race the dyno but since I've seen such disappointing numbers from big motors and unbelievably high numbers from near stock engines as of late I thought I'd throw this out there for evaluation. I'm finally going to get my 408 done and installed in my 2000 SS A4 with a PT4000 converter and 12 bolt w/3.90 gears. Motor is going to end up being around 12.5:1 compression instead of the 13.5:1 I was hoping for. Cam is a 253/261 .648"/.632" lift on a 112 LSA. Heads are hybrid Absolute Speed Stage III's/TEA Stage III's that started life as a regular 6 liter head. I don't have the flow data in front of me but the peak flow numbers at .700" lift were 330+ on the intake and 270+ on the exhaust. Low lift and mid lift numbers were strong as well. TEA said these were some of the best flowing heads of this type they'd ever had on their flow bench. Good news for me I hope. I'm running some Hooker 1 3/4" Ceramic coated LT with the AIR tubes cut off, brazed over and smoothed out for now. No exhaust as it's a race car pretty much. I've got a LS6 intake for now until I can gather a few more funds for a TEA ported (to match the heads) FAST 90 with a Nick Williams throttle body. The car already has an 85MM Mass Air Meter and a MTI lid but that's pretty much it. Please tell me I'm not going to see numbers in the high 300's or low 400's. I think I may shoot myself if that happens. Any predictions on what I may see. Oh yeah, this is a race gas motor so factor that in. Thanks.

Get the gun ready. I have a round in my chamber and am getting ready to pull the trigger if I don't find my missing power. I wish you the best. Keep in mind that you are going to be on the low side of average with an auto, big stall, and the 12 bolt with those gears. It will not be a dyno queen but it should perform very well at the track. Mine on the other hand should be a dyno queen and is behaving more like a dyno jester. I am digging for the problem. Best of luck. See my post on the "Lower than expected dyno results".

Yeah, reading all the "Lower than expected dyno results", "My dyno numbers suck" and then the "Just got back from the dyno and made 500+ RWHP on a stock motor w/o N20" threads are what prompted me to post this. Good luck finding your missing power. I sure hope I don't go having to look for it like you are.

I would not get disapointed before anything happens. You seem like with the uncertanty you are only setting yourself up to fail. Be optomistic. FWIW I think that your 408 should hit 500, it will depend on if you have a lock-up converter or not as non-lock-up ones ro alot of power.

But either way, you should not freak out if it does not break 500. If your "tuner" is a stand up guy/guys he/they will work with you to get the desired results.

I'll give you an example; when my car first came off the dyno it "only" [LOL] put down 477/414. I was a bit sad cause I wanted to see 500. I knew I did not have all the goodies yet so I was not about to freak out. Over the cource of a few months, CARTEK installed an EWP, and retuned my car 2 more times, and then we saw the majic and the car put down 507RW. Point is, don't freak out the first time, sometimes it takes a bit more tinkering to get it right, aspecialy on a new type of combo.

Good Luck and dont worry!

What he said above.

Most likely, you will not hit the 500 rwhp (initially) with an unlocked converter, but with a few more tweaks, you should easily exceed it. The biggest factor is going to be the intake manifold. As good as your heads sound, they're going to be severely limited to making best power with an LS6 intake bolted up in front of them. I'm talking a potential 30 rwhp swing. Tuning the engine and tuning the trans/converter combo will net you the rest. 500 rwhp is definitely in your grasp. Just stay focused on what it takes to get it.
