Default Kooks Headers Rusting????

I bought a set of Kooks stainless headers new back in May '04. I always winter store the car and try not to drive it in the rain too much. This spring when I took it out of winter storage, I noticed a lot of surface rust on my headers. Is this common? I thought stainless steel was rust-free. Is there anything I can do? Any input is appreciated.

call them up, and I'm sure they will help you out - ss should not rust.

You may get a slight bit of surface oxidation, but a simple cleaning up will take care of it. Most coated headers have cleaning instructions with them, I was surprised to see the Kooks didnt, even though mine arent coated I would expect to clean them up. Some have actually polished them prior to install. GL

If I were to take them off, what would be the best method to clean them? And would it make sense to have them coated now? Thanks.

I would clean them with some carb cleaner and maby a wire brush, then spray it again and wipe it off with a rag. No point in having them coated, I'd like people to see STAINLESS when I popped my hood, not ceramic.

I had a set of headers glass beaded and they came out like new. All the surface rust came right off. They weren't stainless, so I just painted them.

Do the QTP's and Kooks use the same grade of SS? I see threads where the kooks rust, but have never heard of this happening to the QTP's.

I think they have a finish warranty on them, or they should for 800+ dollars. contact them and let us know what they say.

I have QTPs and they did this after just a couple months of use......rust all on the bottom and sides of the both collectors. They're not rusting through or anything but there is definitely rust on them. I don't know about what grade Kooks uses, but QTP uses 304 stainless which is the good stuff.......
