Default crank position sensor

While driving yesterday afternoon, my car began to sputter backfire through the exhaust, then shut off. I put it in park and turned the ignition off. Turn the key and the car statted right up and drove home perfectly.
Later that night on my way to work my car did the same thing, Sputter, backfire through the exhaust, and then shut off. This time a friend was driving behind me and said that flames shot out of my mufflers. Again the car started right back up, but repeated the problem about three miles later.
I drove home this morning (eight hours later) without any problems. When I got and ran HPT, it showed a code for my crank position sensor. I cleared the code and let the car run until it reached operating temp. No problems.
Any advice or comments would be helpful. thanks.

I had the same problem a couple of weeks ago. It's a $50 sensor and takes about an hour to change. It's down by the starter.

Why do you need HPT to do that procedure?

anybody know if you need HPT to do this. I have it but in looking at the instuctions I don't see why it's needed.

I cleared the code and it has run fine for the last day and a half. I picked up the new part today, but I think I will wait a couple of days and see what happens.

Did you check the wires on the original one. Did they get melted by your headers???
