...if this is the wrong forum...that's fine, Unit, Patman, or Vendetta, feel free to move it, but there isn't really a forum for "personal" safety gear, and well...I've never bought a helmet before but after riding along for a few auto-x runs...I figure I should get one. So...what are some good resources to get helmet info. I did read one thread in the road race forum and I am leaning towards open face for auto-xing. Best place to buy from? What's a good price? I know I need something generally snelled 2000 or later, so help! :drive:

Hum, what size. Though from some of the things I was reading, the SCCA might possibly ban full face helmets in air bag equiped cars, so...I still might need an open faced one. PM sent btw.

That report came out over 2 years ago I think, and nothing has been done about it since. I don't see anything happening with it.

Compared to a KBC or HJC, yeah.
Compared to a Suomy or Arai, no.
Ultimately you gotta find what fits your head and offers you good visibility, be it full or open face.
Arai makes some car helmets in full and open. Versions like the GP-5K and 5W are full...AND PRICEY! ($800+ list price! :eek2: ) The GP-Jet, Jet2 and Jet/F are all open faced and ~$400.
www.saferacer.com has some stuff on their site in case you havent seen them. Bell, G-force, Simpson, Arai, Sparco, OMP are all on there. Im sure there's others, but thats just what I found in my 5 minute search lol.

I am supprised we are talking helmets, and nobody is discussing SA rating.
Motorcycle helmets aren't designed for auto racing, and won't pass most tech inspections. Open face helmets are great as long as you wear eye protection. Even in a "closed car" you still have debrish (rubber, pebbles) flying into the car, eyes. Remember your windows need to be open for safety.
It sucks trying to pick stuff out of you eye before the next braking zone.
As far as brands, only the price is the difference. As long as it is a SA2005 it should not make a big difference.

I agree with roadracetransam. The reason that SA2005 are required by most racing organizations is that the helmets are designed for Special Applications like Auto Racing and the interior lining is of fire retardant material for safety purposes. An Open Face Helmet is going to be less expensive, so that's an option. As far as price a GForce, Simpson and Pyrotech seem to have economy offers around $150-$200 for open face and $250-$300 for full face.
I find funny that we get a bit of "Shell Shock" when we see helmets costing $600-$1,000, then I remember it is my head I'm protecting and I don't know about you but that is one of my most valuable possessions.
