Default I need help!

So I slam it in second in my friends 97 stang and it feels like 2nd goes out. I let out on the clutch and nothing in second all the other gears are fine. Then I come to a stop and it wont go in any gear but first second and nuetral however when its in first second or nuetral it still is in first. The shifter is in the correct place for first, second, and neutral only it is still really in first. Any ideas of what might be wrong other than the blue oval on the front? I was thinking shifter being broken but he was doing some big burn outs prior to me driving it so maybe clutch? Doesn't sound like a clutch problem though. Any ideas?

Same thing happened to my '97 Mustang. It's from yanking the shifter too hard.
I broke the shift gate (I think thats what it was called). It's a metal piece that slips into a slot in the shift fork before you put the shift shaft in.
It's a $20 part, but pretty hard to get to.
They are parts #13 in This PDF File.

Yes I edited the post above to show the parts. Yes the whole trans needs to come apart IIRC.

Did you do it yourself or pay someone? How much in labor?

I did it myself. I rebuilt the whole trans , did the clutch, etc at 85,000 miles. I should have just replaced the part and synchros because thats all it really needed.
That was about 70 miles before I traded it in on my camaro.
