BURNOUT question
OK so i tried doing a burn out this weekend, put in into second gear and hit the breaks, floor it and nothing happens just revs up, didnt push it to much. I beleive my O2 z28 has something that makes it not go down to first if i manually put the gear in 2nd (so i read) So i put it on first and did the same, the car started burning the tires but would not go above 3k rpms, why is this?
the car has plently of power to burn the tired from a dead stop if i leave it on D and just floor it***

When you are on the brakes you have just that...brakes trying to hold your wheels still...when you floor it you have no resistance.
If you want a high-rev burnout, invest in a line-lock.
It will probably be hard to start a burnout in 2nd if you have decent tires. Definetely use 1st.

Not sure what you did wrong but if TC is off and you put it in 1 then tap the brakes and slam the gass you'll start spinning the tires pretty easily. Back off the gas alittle so you don't hit your rev limiter but stay on it enough so that the wheels don't stop. if you want to start moving get off the gas alittle or the brakes.

Don't get to crazy with the line locks without the kit, burnout are cool but if your brakes are on in the back you will have a hard time gettin the rpms above 3k. Try getting the wheels spinning and feather the brake out, you will not need as much brake once the rpms rise right up and then you can just let the brake out and the car should be smoking itself still if you are on level ground.
Just don't hurt your brakes showing off for the kids.

Leave the car in drive. I had the same problem if I used first or second. Found out that I was holding the brakes too hard. Just lightly hold the brakes and hit the gas, the car will try to move forward, apply a little bit of the brake to stop it from moving any further and the burnout will start. Release the brake and roll out of the burnout.

I just leave it in drive; except for this one occasion. Last day of school last year I put it in 1st, and when the RPM's started to peak, I put it in second. There was enough tire spin to keep the R's up in second and smoke em' pretty good.

Maybe my car is a tad on the strange side then guys...
Here's my burn out "routine"
Bring car to a dead stop.
Put in NEUTRAL
Place left foot firmly down on break pedel...all the way to the floor...one motion
Put car in DRIVE...not OVER DRIVE
Floor it
Let RPMS hit about 4500-5000 feather out of the gas until it's around 3500-3800
Wait till you see white smoke in side mirrors
Let foot off brake and feather out of the gas as you roll forward
Stage at the lights.
I have never had a problem with holding my breaks too hard. Of course I have never heard about trying to do a burn out with the tranny in 2nd manually either.

You never want to start a burnout in second gear, you wear out you trans clutches faster. Always start in first, either by having the selector in OD D or 1, then allow the trans to shift into second or on later models, manually move it into 2.
Using second gear, on models that can start in second, is a good way of finding out how high your stall is on your converter. Other then using it for this or as recommened by GM, you should never start out in second from a dead stop.
