Default C5 heads

what's the difference between '97-'98 c5 heads and '02+ c5 heads. one of my buddies that has an '00 camaro ss told me that the '97-'98 LS1s had shitty heads and they flowed crappy. is this true? does the '02 + LS1 heads flow better than the '97-'98 LS1 heads?

There are a few different LS1 castings..

97-98 806 casting used perimeter bolt valve covers and the coil packs were bolted directly to the valve covers.
99-00 853 casting. used new style center bolt valve covers, and the coil packs mounted to brackets that mounted to the valve covers.
01-04 241 casting.

Just for comparison
01-04 LS6 and 05+ LS2 head (243 casting).. they outflow the LS1 head stock by a lil bit, but still doesnt flow that great when comparing to aftermarket or ported stuff.

All LS1 heads flow pretty much the same stock. There's no real gains or anything. The change from 853 to a 241 used a different casting method (hence the number change) and also some 853's had a notch in the deck, (must use the older style graphite head gasket with those). The 241's and some of the later 853's can use the newer thicker MLS gasket. The older gaskets work fine on all of them.

Any LS1 head can be ported and flow well no matter what casting. I personally run big valved CNC'd "worked" 241's with the thinner graphite gasket. They beat the **** out of an LS6 (243) head and flow like an AFR 205.

The older design does flow a little less but it isnt really worth any HP..
