Default PS pump pulley install problems

I went to install a new pulley on my power steering pump and actually broke the installer trying to do it. The pulley got real tight about 3/16" from all the way on and broke the bolt on the tool-any ideas here? Should you lube the shaft first? Oh yea, C5 type pump.
Thanks for any advice

lubing the shift never hurts, what tool brand were you using?

Don't know who made the tool, my son had it in his box but I'm sure it was some off brand. I'm going to get a grade 8 bolt and use a nut and washers tonight and see if I can pull it on the rest of the way.

The LS1 f-body pump threads are SAE, not metric. Probably the same for the C5. Just fyi, in case that was part of the problem.
