Default timing my short block

so tearing apart my motor...i find there is no dot/ hole on the cam gear...from wat ive seen everywhere there should be a hole so u can line it up with the one on the crank gear...but i do have a little dot on the back of the cam gear right on one of the teeth...should i go by that and mark it on the other side ? second question is timing it correctly...so once i get the crank gear off the old motor...it installs only one way back onto the crank right since its keyed? then i should get piston one to tdc and the hole in the crank gear should be at 12 o clock ? and i can just rotate the cam with the camgear until i get the marks lined up....then put the chiain on ? would it be timed then? ive never done this before so any help would be arpecited

It is in there.
But unless there is a mistake the dot should be on the outside.
