Default Melling vs. QTP HV Oil Pumps

Between the two, which would be a better unit?

Melling is a good oil pump but you can't run a double roll timing chane with it it's to thick

Doesn't most double roller chain sets come with shims for the oil pump to help get clearance. Other than that, what other differences are there?

Isn't the QTP pump basically a Melling pump?

I called Melling on the shims ,and they said even with the shims it still would not work ,because the pump gears are thicker witch make the body of the oil pump thicker to.They use there own castings on there pump.

I "believe" the QTP unit requires the use of the QTP timing cover, but I could be wrong on this. The QTP also uses some better materials in the housing. I would call Barry at QTP to confirm though, it was almost a year ago when I looked at it at Carlisle, and the mind isn't what it used to be

Yes if you talk with Barry he is going to tell you that you have to run his cover. Well his cover for the LS2 isn't out yet and I wanted to run his pump. So I got the QTP pump and when I went to put the cover on it fit without having the clearance it at all. I thought that I might have to slightly clearance it some but it fit fine without doing anything to the stock LS2 cover.

So you had no clearance issue with LS2 timing chain cover, how much different is the LS2 cover versus LS1?

No I had no clearance issues. My guess clearance wise there basically isn't any difference between LS1 and LS2 cover. The main difference between LS1 and LS2 cover is the LS2 cover has the cam sensor in it where the LS1 doesn't.

I tried using an LS1 cover on an iron block with a rollmaster and it just wasn't gonna happen. The cover clearly hit the pump body and left a witness mark where it was doing so. I was going to clearance it but there simply wasn't enough material to make it up.

We used a Cloyes Hex-a-just and everything is fine now.
