Default Pilot Bearing Installation. Ok to tap it in with an impact socket and small hammer?

Just want to make sure it is safe to do this or do I need to rent a tool to press the pilot bearing in there.

Thanks

That will work fine. I forget which size socket I used, but it worked perfectly.

one side has a chamfer around the inside of the bearing... that side goes towards the transmission.

Dunno what he means by that but I was told the flat side goes towards the trans. One side is like 2 piece if you look at it. I was told that side goes towards the engine.

I put my new one in the exact way my original was in there.
The "2 piece" end goes toward the engine. The "flat piece" goes towards the tranny.

Yeah this seems to be 50/50. I put the flat side towards the trans, and chamfered side towards the motor. This is the way the one that was in there before was situated.

When you say flat side, do you mean like my drawing? Or opposite of my drawing.

If opposite, that is damn strange. Does this mean it does not matter which way the pilot goes? Were you the first guy to change the pilot on your car? Cause I was the first to change mine (original owner), so I am leaning toward the way my drawing shows. If you are the original owner of your car and this is the first time you have changed your pilot, then I guess it does not matter? Stuff like this bothers the hell out of me.

I was just thinking the same thing. I don't think it does matter then. The only reason I was curious is because I saw it in the manual opposite of how I saw it when I pulled it the first time.

I put mine in with the 'chamfered' end towards the transmission, it is there to help guide the tranny back in when you are reinstalling it. Although, it took my dad and I 2 hours to get the tranny back in. Now I am worried. I had a spec stage 2 go bad in 30K miles. I wonder if the shop put it in wrong(the same way I did).

Does anybody a definite answer to this?

Like your drawing. Perhaps I shouldn't be using chamfered. I put the flat end towards the transmission, and the 2 piece end towards the motor.

That picture is shoving the chamfered side that goes towards the trans. The chamfer on the bushing is even more visible.

Lol and that was twice as long as mine lasted. 6k for my Spec 3 before it became one with the flywheel.

Andrew

So you are saying chamfered towards trans (like I installed mine) and everyone else is saying chamfered end towards motor. Does anyone actually know how or if it matters which way it is installed?

Look at it logically. What good would the "chamfered" side do towards the engine? The "Chamfer" is there to make it easier to guide the input shaft of the tranny into it. So, there is absolutely no point in putting the chamfered side towards the engine.

Quick Reply: Pilot Bearing Installation. Ok to tap it in with an impact socket and small hammer?
