Default 408 iron or aluminum?

i know you can get the LS block in either aluminum or iron...i like the idea of the aluminum being all in all about 600 lbs but im wanting to run a TT kit pushing 15-20 psi making right around 1,000-1200 hp...its pretty much a must that i use an iron block with all the heat and everything right? i just wanted to make sure..i know that aluminum would expand very easily and possibly warp

thx for any advice

For structural integrity, strength, longevity, and peace of mind I would recommend the iron block, especially at those power levels. It has been done on the Alum but I'm not going to risk my investment knowing that the alum blocks are 50% weaker than the iron.

you can also machine tighter clearances with an iron block because of its lower rate of expansion.

An engine builder who is well regarded here told me he generally sees higher power levels with the iron block. The cylinder walls are more rigid, not to mention the increased stability on the bottom end. All in all, a worthwhile tradeoff for the ~80 Lb weight penalty.

depends what your calling a top mount. your going to run out of space if your truely talking a top mount. they have been placed where the battery and fuse box's are with some relocating of each.

I was planning to go with a 370 iron block until i saw what W2W did with their LS2 block. They are running 28lbs of boost and trapping 16x mph with an LS2 aluminum block. Hell my setup will never see that much boost (16-18lbs max plus 50-100 shot) so im going with a LS2 block instead of a LQ9 block. At least its 80lbs lighter.

im talkin about two turbos sitting above the valve covers...can it be done...like i said this will be on a thirdgen so it wont be the same engine bay...i think we have a bit more room than the 4th gens and the lsx motors dont tuck as much

I would go with the iron block. I almost went aluminum but for piece of mind decided on the iron. Aluminum will work but for how long?

Yes a resleaved aluminum block is very strong, but the penalty is cost and the fact that many people have had trouble with resleaved blocks when they aren't done properly. For what you would spend on a resleaved LS2 block you might as well buy the Dart block and be really strong.

I would (and did) go iron. The block is cheap to buy and its a proven performer.

I'd bet your're talking about that universal GM TT manifold kit on ebay that set the turbos above each valve cover. The only way to do that would be to run some tiny turbos (t3) or cut out your hood and have direct air intake. Not saying it can't be done but it wouldn't be the placement of choice for sure. LS1 TT kits have been placed;up hi front(HiFlo), under last primaries(incon/CAS), beside tranny bellhousing (APS), up front down low (GMR), and out back (STS).

You don't have to resleeve a ls2 block, it comes stock with a 4.00 bore and with a 4.00 crank will give you 402cuin. or 370 with a stock crank. Mike Browns alum. 370 is making 1200+crank hp for over a 1 1/2 years with absolutley no issues and he runs the car at the track alot!!

Yeah, that's the kit I was talking about. BBS sells/did sell that kit on ebay. First off those SBC manifolds will not bolt up to an lsx block. Also that placement would put them right where the wheel well/shock tower is.

you might be better off fabbing up a kit with the 6.0 manifolds or some shortys.
