Default Car will not start....no power... loud clicking noise

The car will not start or turnover....Makes sounds when the key is in and gauges go up and then come back down. About 2 seconds after you try to turn the key it starts making a semi loud clicking noise(sounds like its coming from the passenger side of firewall.

Any ideas?
I replaced the alternator yesterday. Drove it to and from work and it worked fine. Got home and now its doing this.

First thing I'd check is the battery connections/voltage - sounds like classic dead battery or low voltage. Was the volt gauge showing it charging yesterday?

After it makes the click does all the power in the car die?

Mine had a similar problem, it turned out to be a corroded battery cable, the corrosion was under the boot. Cleaned it all off and I haven't had a problem since.

I'm betting on a corroded battery cable.

Just because it is a new battery. It does not mean it is charged. Some batteries still come uncharged. Sounds like a battery problem to me.

if you have a multimeter, measure the voltage at the battery positive terminal and starter 12v terminal while somebody cranks the engine. if the voltage is higher than 1.5v, you need a new cable. the clicking you hear in the underhood fuse box is the starter's relay.

Damn, I learn something ewveryday. I just assumed the solenoid was on the starter like every other car I've owned

attempted to jump it today...would make ticking noise the entire time whether the key is in the ignition or not. Then when you would try to start it it would stop making the noise and would not even attempt to turn over....no repsonse from the gauges at all. checked the battey with a voltmeter before i jumped it and it was at 13 volts.
is there a way to disable the stock alarm system?

the solenoid IS still on the starter. the turn on lead for the solenoid has a relay for itself in the underhood fuse block. the ignition key powers the relay, which when energized, applies 12V to the turn-on lead for the solenoid, which engages the bendix and starter motor.

sounds 100% identical to the problem I had, which was a corroded positive battery cable. Pull the cables off the battery, and pull the rubber boot down to expost the whole metal connector and then used a wire brush or some sandpaper to clean them up.

try turning your headlights on if they're dim, you've probably got a bad connection at the battery or a bad cable. If I were you, I'd clean off all the connections, at the battery, the starter, the junction box on the inner fender, etc. before I did anything. these people are giving you sound advice

Default AHA, That's how you clean the cable!

I replaced a dead battery, put a brand new one in, and then had LOW VOLTAGE. WTF? Then I'd play with the cables a bit, tighten them down, then the car would start and run, but often run with fast idle, and the asr light would go off all by itself......

NO his must be doing the exact same thing as mine which I have yet to resolve, the clicking is coming FROM the solenoid. My gauges are messing up as well like he said.

So far I have replaces the cable TO the starter, the starter, IGN and STARTER relays and all relevant fuses, and the battery... dude WTF. I'm about to try replacing the ground to block and the battery to fuse block cable, and if that doesn't solve the problem I'm ******* giving up and taking it somewhere to get a diagnosis.

If you figure anything out dude, let me know, my car has been down for a month.
