Question SPEC flywheel with LS7 clutch?

SPEC says that their steel flywheel with replaceable friction surface will work with an LS7 clutch. Any expert opinions on this or has anyone successfully installed this combo?

I called SPEC about this on Friday as I need a new clutch myself. The guy I talked to was their "imports" specialist guy so he ran and talked to the GM guy. He reported, that yes, it will work sans problems.

I'll find out over Memorial Day weekend as that's when my billet, SPEC LS2 flywheel will be bolted onto my LS1 followed by an LS7 clutch.

You can get a SPEC Billet flywheel from any of our sponsors that sell SPEC clutches or buy it directly from SPEC (www.specclutch.com)

I ordered mine yesterday from LM Performance for $229. I've never dealt with them before. Hoping my order is shipped quickly and accurately.

SCRATCH THAT!!!

Just talked to SPEC again and the LS7 won't work with their LS2 flywheel. They state that their LS2 Flywheel is too thin to work with an LS7 clutch/pressure plate.

He tried to sell me an LS1 Stage 1 clutch package instead.

Those any good? I keep reading about SPEC pressure plates frag'ing at high rpm's. That's scary.

How can it be too thin? Isn't it a replacement for the factory ls2 flywheel? I don't understand that one. From what I've read the ls2 and ls7 flywheels are the same. A sponsor needs compare the two.

There is no such thing as an LS7 flywheel, only an LS2 flywheel. The LS2 flywheel is about 1/2" wider than an LS1 flywheeel and has a slightly different design. The LS1 flywheel will not work with a LS7 clutch.

Thats what I said above. The ls2 and ls7 are the same flywheel. We are talking about the spec ls2 billet steel flywheel. Not the ls1.

Why would spec say it wouldn't work with the ls7 since they both use the same flywheel from the factory?

Talked to the SPEC tech guys several times, both myself and through another site sponsor. The SPEC billet LS2 flywheel will not work with an LS7 clutch without some sort of shims or modifications. The face thickness is too thin. They apparently designed it to work only with the SPEC clutches.

Seems fishy to me, for sure. They don't say anywhere that an LS2 SPEC clutch requires the use of their flywheel. But if the flywheel is so thin it'll only work with a SPEC clutch then that SPEC clutch wouldn't work with a stock or any other flywheel.

I'm over it. I'm getting and LS7 kit complete with an iron flywheel.

I was doing some research when I was looking to get my clutch and IIRC there are two diferant types of LS2 flywheels out there, one for the GTO and one for the Vette. The GTO is flat with no detail, similiar to an ls1 fw, but the vette has "blocks" on the outer edge that the LS7 pp dowels go into.
