Default Turbo position question

Has anyone ever mounted a turbo vertical? As in the inlet sticking straight up and the exhaust going straight down. Im sure the oil would still drain. Just a thought that would seriously save some engine compartment space.

I'm sure someone like Jose would know, but I think it would depend on how the bearings and stuff get the oil...meaning running it up and down may starve them for oil...but I dont really know how it all works inside. Maybe some odd tensional forces on the shaft/bearings as well?? I would also think you would need a scavenge pump just in case.

i know you have to have the bearing clocked rightpointing down or problems with the turbo youll have.

so no you cant position them like that. (if you could you would probably already seen it done)

IIRC the recomendation is to have them clocked no more than 30degrees off any axis for oil return.

Typically you don't want more then 45 deg. off vertical either way.

Always a reason it has not been done yet. But then....... how the heck do they work in airplanes that can be at any particular angle?

The turbo prop planes I believe use scavenge pumps.

Ok, so bottom line, what stops you from putting them upright WITH a pump?

the pump won't suck oil out of the part of the turbo below the return line

it will just get full and seap past the seals far as I understand it.

your right mate! went to watch them for the GB 2005 event (when marco martins CO driver died! ) and had a great time.

we where stood about 6 feet from the cars on the inside of this great right hander watching the drivers faces as they literaly threw the cars sideways through the corner! it was simply amazing!

also on the second day saw some of them getting a little out of hand down a very bumpy straight, but all pulled it back!

WRC is a great top flight motor sport and really good fun to watch! also these things run in ALL condition! only time these guys dont run is if there are too many spectators, or, as in last year, something major has haopend! and you can get litteraly feet form the cars while they are racing, everyone is chilled and willing to help (even the welsh marshals! lol).

thanks Chris.

well, i am happy to finally be a member of this board, i was very glad to find this thread with the search.

i was just contemplating a turbo install on the vertical.
subaru did a lot of work to their seals to get the vertical to work with a standard oil pump, but chuntington101 pointed out that the "wrc scoobies" run vertical with a dry sump.
i am running a 4 stage dry sump pump, and would have a suction stage devoted to the turbo drain. seems like that would work to me? the vacuum created should keep the oil out of the seals.?
somebody must have tried this. maybe?

thanks, guys

sorry guys, one more time.
i found this diagram in my Hughes/mcinnes turbo book (very good read even though it is older)

this is almost identical to what i see inside my turbo (got and inch drain hole to look through)
if i mount this with the compressor pointed down, the thrust bearing will have lots of oil, and i am pretty sure that if the seals will leak, it will be air being pulled through by the suction stage, not oil leaking out.
am i wrong again? as it sits, i am very likely to do it.
