Factory Y-Pipe
On the factory y pipe on the left side the pipe that comes from the exhaust manifold is really little and allmost square can u get this modified to a bigger size to increase airflow, sound, and performance.?

That flattened spot does not impeed flow. I know, it looks like it should. NASCAR uses those kind of pipes too, FWIW. If you replace the Y-pipe with a round one of the same diameter (2.5") you won't see any power gain nor do I think you'll hear much, if any, difference.

You can replace the factory y-pipe but you won't gain much, if anything, with a stock setup. Bigger cube motors as well at heads/cam cars will see increases though. The flat y-pipe tube is there for ground clearance. I don't have any personal experience with it altering the exhaust note.

Right, with a higher HP setup (a strong heads/cam setup or large CI engine) a 3" Y-pipe is a great idea. This would be running headers or course. But for milder engine running stock manifolds, the stock Y-pipe is fine.

Re: Factory Y-Pipe
The only bad part of the factory y-pipe is that when the pipe goes from round to flat to round again it causes turbulence and a little backpressure in the exhaust. Not much though.

Re: Factory Y-Pipe
I got the slp ypipe. I couldnt tell a difference in power. Sounds a little deeper now. And I mean a little.
You have to remember, the stock y may impede flow but only on 4 of the cylinders. I think the biggest restriction is the 2.75" collector. Also the slp y hangs really low. Ridiculously low.
I bought the pipe used so its not a big deal. But to spend $200 for new one would be a total waste of money. For best bang for the buck, Mac headers with ypipe would be the way to go.
Its funny, when you look at the stock ypipe it looks as restrictive as hell but it dont seem to matter.

It's a no win situation.

Re: Factory Y-Pipe
Many guys modify the collector on the end of stock Y-pipe, going back to where it's a full 3", cutting it off there w/sawzall, and welding a piece of full size 3" pipe at the cut, making it the same total length as stock, then slipping it over the int. pipe, either welding cut-out type flanges on, & bolting to the int. pipe, or band clamp it to the int. pipe. People in the know say that all the restriction in the stock Y-pipe is at the collector end, where it's reduced down to about 2&5/8". I bought a LG Motorsports 2&3/4" Y-pipe, and plan on welding 2 cutouts into it. Has anyone else done anything similar to this? Do not know if it'll be an improvement, or not. My '02 SS has the SLP dual-dual, and I know from my '99 car, which also had it, that they flow pretty damn good. Hoping the LG piece w/2 cutouts will help a little...Best wishes. Re: Factory Y-Pipe
Hi R-68. I have not installed the LG Y yet. My car is put away in corner of my garage. It & converter install to happen in Feb. I do not believe it will be the Y that makes the difference at the track. It will be the cutouts. However, the LG Y-pipe is definitely a quality piece, and weighs less than the stock unit. Hope this helps. WJ.

Re: Factory Y-Pipe
Hmmm............
I was just thinking. This could be really crazy but....
I noticed complaints with LT's that the Y-pipe's either hang too low or bang the floor. So, if the "crushed" y-pipe doesn't really impede flow because there is as much airflow as in a round 2.5" pipe, couldn't a 3" "crushed" y-pipe be made for LT's? I mean wouldn't that fix a large part of the clearance issue? Especially if it used a proper collector at the end?

Re: Factory Y-Pipe
I currently have a 3" cut-out located on the cat-back pipe approx. 3" after the y-pipe connects into the cat-back. Would it be of any benefit to have 1 cut-out on each side right after the headers connect to the y-pipe instead of the single one I currently have?

Re: Factory Y-Pipe
Bass98WS6: I'm hoping that 2 cut-outs welded into the 2&3/4 LG Motorsports Y-pipe will be an improvement on my '02 A4 SS with the SLP dual-dual exhaust. Just hope they'll be far enough away from the cats so I won't have to use O2 sims. Actually, the '01&'02 cats flow fairly well. I do not want to go the header route, as yet. Maybe someone's tried the 2 cutout in-the-Y setup, I don't know..... Anyone?? Best wishes. WJ.
