digital gauges on the GTA
The digital gauges were an option in 87 and 88.
Airbags came in 90, so they had to get rid of the steering-wheel stereo controls (a feature way ahead of its time).

I almost got a 92 GTA [very low number car for that year]. Red hardtop with tan interior. The dealer wanted too much for it at the time, and some other guy ended up buying it. I cringe everytime I see on the road. It's always dirty, driven year round, and I'd be surprised if it gets an oil change ever 3,000 miles.

good torque from a 4cyl and rear wheel drive too! also had climate control and a neat little lcd display for the temp.

Actually, GM shot themselves in the foot. After the Knight Rider series ended, GM would no longer supply them Trans Am's for any new series or movies. In the Knight Rider 2000 movie, they used a Dodge Stealth. GM's answer: "Too many people where asking for Knight Rider when they would come into the show room." Then the decline of the F-Body started as we all know. Smokey&The Bandit and Knight Rider is what put the Trans Am on the map.

Anytime i see smokey and the bandit 1 or 2 on AMC or something I always wanna go out and get me one...and then I ask my dad why he sold his 79 Formula for a 83 5.0 GT back in his younger days.

Man I miss driving my GTA. I got a black, notchback with t tops and the digital dash. Everyone said it was like the Knight Rider. Truth be told it took me a long time to find a black gta that had the digital dash. I also made a tape with the knight rider theme on continous loop, chicks used to dig it!

yeah they used TA's in EVERYTHING back then... smokey and the bandit series, knight rider, both cannonball run movies (first one had a Turbo 80-81 TA cop car, second was also cop cars, 82-83's)... hell even burt reynolds makes a really funny bandit remark on cannonball run 1
when he and dom D. were looking for a car to use in the race, he goes "we could get a black trans am....nah, that's been done"
GM should have taken a page from what ford did back in the 1970s...
in 1976 ford offered a limited production special edition starsky and hitch torino. they sold 1000 of them
gm could have done something where they made the car all black with blackouts, and the pmd seats, maybe some sort of blackout nose or something and called it the knight rider edition..
