5/20 Race Report: Open Comp / Quick 8 Race #2
Well, after missing the action for a couple weeks, I was ready to hit the track again. Bummer was: mid 90s for temps, and track surface temps of 128-140 degrees I drove the Nova out for some Quick 8 street and Open Comp racing.
After my 2 time runs, I ended up with a 11.68 index, which I thought should work well for 2800 DA conditions and a somewhat slippery track.
1st round Quick 8 street: I get a bye run, -.003 red light and rip off a 1.559 60 foot, 11.59 @ 114.94 mph. So I'm a little nervous knowing I have some et to scrub if I hook like that again.
Finals against a 13.95 index Mustang, his -.013 red, he runs 13.951, I spun bad to a 1.629 60 foot and run 11.725 @ 113.95 mph, but with an .006 light. So I got majorly lucky here!
Round 1 Open Comp - I get the odd bye run and decide to try the left lane (been running right all 4 runs before) to see if it hooks better. The result:
.007 reaction time, 1.642 60 foot, 11.672 @ 114.60 mph. So even spinning I'm okay against my 11.68 index (or so I thought).
Before round 2, my buddy Kevin watching my runs says I'm peeling up rubber after my burnout and off the line, so he figures to try lining me up just outside the groove on fresh rubber. I'm paired with a 10.15 index roadster.
His .063 to my .015 light, I spin horribly to a 1.722 and thought I was done! Finish line coming and he's right next to me, but I get there first, 11.759 @ 114.69 (on 11.68 index) to his 10.199 @ 127.15 (MOV at the stripe was .008 (8 thousandths)!
Round 3 - paired with a 10.84 index Camaro. My .036 light to his .038 light, spun but not as bad as last time (1.669) and I have room to hit the brakes at the end to go 11.728 to his 10.973.
Round 4 I get a bye run based on the ladder, and I just broke the starting beams and backed out to keep the car cool and hope the track might get better for the finals.
Finals - paired with a 10.57 index 4-speed Maverick. My .015 to his .031 light, I spin again with a 1.662 60 foot, but have room again at the end to brake and run 11.713 against his 10.657.
So even spinning most of the day, I somehow get 2 class wins! $290 bucks and 2 trophies. Plus now #2 in points after 2 races.
I hung around and watched the filming of PINKS 1st episode of the night (started at 7 pm and ended around 10 pm) and then they gave everyone a test and tune run. I had the car back into street trim with the M/T radials on (275/60/15), and figured "why not, sun's gone, track should be good" and line up against my buddy Jason's 71 Nova with a 496 big block (also driven out, completely street legal, and on same size radials as me). We figured my small block with the 120 hp shot of nitrous against his big block should make a good run.
We did the burnouts and lined up. Both of us footbraking, I set tire pressure at 17 psi. He's only made 3 runs on his radials, and he's rolling into the throttle versus my stall to 1800 rpm footbraking and stab the gas hooking approach.
Me / Jason
.038 / .182 - reaction time
1.512 / 1.493 - 60 foot
6.740 / 6.630 - 1/8 mile
101.86 / 102.88 - 1/8 mile mph
8.836 / 8.708 - 1000 foot
10.625 @ 125.50 mph / 10.484 @ 126.38 mph - 1/4 mile
Margin? 3 thousandths my way!
We were looking at each other all the way down track, and it was close! I got on the spray about 20 feet out and she dead hooked with no spin, so there might be 10.50's in her on the radials.
We aired up the tires to 22 psi and drove out the gate right after that. Man I love these tires!
Okay, majorly long post and I apologize! Seems my luck has come around, but there's always next weekend....
Hope everyone had a good weekend, post up your results!

Nice Derek.. Congrats....
Our weekend was not as great.. Greg raced Saturday night at LMSP hit low 5s all during TNt and i mean like 5.0s and 5.1s. Got all the way to 5th place and he red lighted. a 4.98 man that pissed him off more then if he would have gotten a 4.5 or lower light. So close to a perfect tree. I have done that many times...
