Default where is my SS supposed idle?

in my 2000 SS A4 my engine idles at around 550 when in drive and in park around 600-700. is this normal for my car? cause my 97 RS V6 camaro idled around 800-900 in drive. today it happened once and yesterday it happened once; i was at a light and all of a sudden the rev dropped from 550 to about 400 or alittle more and when i went to give it gas immedeatly as i saw the needle drop it was like i was driving a 6 speed and popped the clutch, it gave gas to the engine then it hesitated like i took my foot off the pedal, but i never took my foot off. i had a similar probelm like this in my 88 IROC and the problem was the timing was advanced 80 degrees and the fuel pump was going out big time, could it be my fuel pump or something far worse? just had the oil changed early friday morning and i checked my tranny fluid and it's red like it should be and didn't smell burnt. so any ideas?

You cant go by the stock tach, as theyre invairiably off. Mine reads 950 when the motor is actually spinning 800. It also lags by a half second on the top end. Unless you have a computer or aftermarket tach, i bet you its just the stock tach. But anyway, it should idle at 800, IIRC.

I'm in a 2000 A4 and 550 sounds quite low...

Has it always been like that? or after mods?

Since my cam and stall I sometimes run into idling issues on a cold start (and when in reverse). Sounds like the tach could be off. what grade fuel do you run?

Injectors ever been cleaned? How many miles are on the car?

mine starts up at about 800-900 but after it warms up the idle drops to about 500 as well. i was thinking about raising the idle up to about 700, 500 just seems kinda low.

Stock A4 warm idle is 550 in gear and 650 in park/neutral.....you're right where you should be! Like said though, don't pay attention to your tach. Some are pretty close but most, mine included, are a joke. My tach is ~300rpm fast at idle, and it gets worse the higher the revs go. I shift at 6400 rpm and my tach is almost to 7k by then.

I like my A4 cars to idle around 700-750 and my M6's to be 800-850 RPM.

you can check with most any data logging/monitoring software.

only mods i've done since purchasing the car last june was the SLP y-pipe, SLP catback exhaust, SLP lid, high flow filter and SLP smooth bellows. i haven't done anything to the engine at all and i honestly don't know if the previous owners did anything to it as it was an arizona car sold to a ca dealership through auction. car has 68XXX on it and it runs strong. but no i haven't replaced the injectors yet since i'm waitin for the cam install next year, but i think i might just put the bigger injectors on now and just pray thats way the idle dropped to 450. oh it's always idled 550 since i've had it

the fuel i use is 91 octane at chevron, don't fill up anywhere else. i picked up some fuel injector cleanor at the chevron here and am gonna wait till i need to fill up again. something i noticed today, it happens only after i gun it and then at the next time i stop it idles really low and drops to 450 in drive and when i go to drive from the stop it seems like i lost power, like it doesn't accelerate like it is supposed to

550-600 sounds about right for an automatic.

it was a vaccum leak from the intake itself coming undone from the neck of the lid to the smooth bellows, so pretty much my intake wasn't hooked up

Unless youre reading your RPM off a scan tool or software, the tach is meaningless as theyre all off from the factory. Mine reads 950 when idle is actually 800 as per the ECU.

I didn't see where you said it hesitated when giving it gas. Yeah, that's not normal, and glad you found the culprit
