Is it a worthwhile mod if you already have cut out the air box and have a lid ?

You have to cut the air box base to do the install anyway. I was more than satisfied, especially in the upper revs! <img src="http://www.stanggang.com/smiles/smiley-faces7.gif" alt=" - " />

Yes. It works much better than the "free ram air"

I think any kind of sealed ram air is better than nothing. My new setup keeps the filter cleaner than just the free ram air mod by cutting a slit in the bottom of the tray. Plus it grabs cool air, not hot air at the top of the radiator support and it's sealed.
