Building a 355 with srp piston and stock internal, what oil pump should i run . have been told no to run a HV????

People are WAY too fast to ASSume the stock or stock equivalent pump is weak or inadequate.

*sigh*...we've been through this before. Yes a stock pump will perform well enough for your engine. HOWEVER, a decent aftermarket hi volume (not high pressure) will also perform very well. This is just like cam threads and everyone has their own views. I myself use Melling Hi Volume pumps on most engines I build. Though when i build my stroker I am looking at the Moroso pump.

That answer was stock or stock equivalent is all you need, a LITTLE ability to think might have revealed that riddle to you.

A HV pump will put more strain on the drive, the PLASTIC drive, and some guys have had them pump the pan dry if you use a stock pan and sustain high rpms like road racing. Two risks that while not great are catastrophic if you are the one they happen too. IF you decide against my advise to not "upgrade" please at least upgrade the pan.

Yes, i should have mentioned using the melling steel renforced driveshaft for the pump. A whopping extra $5.00. Hi volume pumps COULD suck a pan dry though the odds are less than slim. If hivolume pumps were such a "threat" they wouldn't be used as widely as they are.

I use the stock pump after doing the 355ci. I have had no problems. I do not road race the car, just 1/4 mile it a few times a year. The pump now has 64k miles on it.

The driveshaft is a good point but I was replying to the dummy distributor stub that links the oilpump to the cam. I have seen guys who "upgraded" pumps start having problems with that.

i can see where that might be an issue on an LT engine since they have the dummy shaft (yet another thing I am glad to be rid of). Anything with a distributer will have no issue with a HV pump wear wise unless they try running straight 50 weight in sub zero temps. lol

Melling high volume pump
Canton pickup (bolts on so it can't come off after pressing it on)
And a metal shaft connection

I would use a stock big block pump from Mellings or Moroso with the anti cavatiation grooves milled into the cap.
