Default Ported Stock MAF or SLP MAF

My Camaro SS has recently been heavily modded. One of the mods that I made was to port my MAF. I'm beginning to wonder if I should have done this or simply purchased an SLP MAF. I am also going to have my car tuned in about a week. Should I keep the ported stock MAF or get the SLP MAF?

My car is stock so my experience my not be the same as yours. I ported my stock one, then got to reading about all the problems with ported MAFs causing a lean condition. Bought SLP version and wasted my money. I can change them at the track and see no difference in HP, judging from the mph speeds. I've swapped them out several times and can see nothing. For comparison, I can remove the filter and consistantly see a minor increase in mph.
Since your engine could use more air, I would think the bigger SLP version would help. Just a guess, I don't have a modded motor. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Frown]" src="gr_sad.gif" /> I'm gonna keep it as it doesn't seem to hurt performance and I might end up throwing some heads and a cam in one day. Good luck, hopefully someone with a more serious motor than me will chime in and be able to help you.

I recently installed an SLP 85mm MAF and haven't seen enough difference to get excited about. The 85mm MAF calibration is almost 12% lower than my stock MAF and I've been tweaking the MAF table to correct this. I'm going to install another one on a friends car in the next week or so and I'll scan before and after results. My car is an SLP SS with A4 and has heads and cam installed. My friends car is a standard SS and is all stock. I'll try and report back when I have some more info.
Cheers,

Thanks for your replies. I was wondering if I could get some input from the Colonel on this question. Colonel are you awake?

I just installed a Granatelli MAF today. They are a little on the expencive side (269.00) compared to the SLP (149.00). I kind of like it though. It's not a big difference, but it is noticiable. I think it was a good mod.....

I have a ported stock MAF, and haven't noticed any problems with anything. It does breath a little better, but the mod that I made that made a bigger diff, was yanking out the whole air box, and installing K&N's FIPK. WOW, you can stand by the engine and at idle you can hear it breathing.

I installed a SLP mass air a week ago and it made a huge difference in how the car pulls at mid-high rpm's. With the stock mass second gear didn't have much grunt and now I loose traction in second and easily chirp going into third and that's with slow granny shifting. Before I had to let the clutch out as fast I can to get even the slightest chirp. When I installed my lid I didn't notice squat in the seat of the pants feel.

The lid is the worst restriction in the
stock air path. It affects only airflow,
and its impact really becomes known at
the top end.

The stock MAF is less than 1/5 the
restriction, by my measurements, but it
has two effects - air flow, and mixture.

The airflow improvement of either of these,
at part throttle, is obscured by the throttle
restriction. However, the MAF's effect on
mixture will be noticeable across the band,
a little mixture difference can make a big
difference in throttle response and part-
throttle HP.

If you get the "right" MAF (for your PCM and
engine's particulars) the mixture cal is a
significant bonus. If you get the "wrong"
one, the opposite. With so many year-year
minor differences in engine and PCM program,
it looks like a crap shoot to me. And going
by the number of used aftermarket MAFs for
sale constantly, lots of people hit "snake
eyes". But the happy ones don't sell theirs.
All you can do is blow on the dice and roll.

SLP sells 85mm MAFs with two different P/Ns,
for the '98-'00 and the '01-'02. Calibration
different, I reckon.

At WOT the stock MAF would consistently report 304gms/sec. The new MAF reports 265gms/sec. The trans shift firmness was notably softer and my idle IACs were raised by almost double.
I'm beginning to think that these aftermarket MAFs aren't calibrated to factory specs as they say they are and it is indeed a crap shoot getting one that closely matches the originals output. If anyone has an idea, I'm happy to listen.
Thanks,

Thanks for your responses. The question is now moot. I am going to have the car tuned this week. I have been told that I did the right things by putting ends on the MAF instead of getting an aftermarket MAF. It seems that the tuning would adversely affect the calibration of the aftermarket MAF.
