Default About a 97 LS1...

What's the difference between the 1997 corvette LS1 as opposed to a 1998 camaro t/a LS1? Any bad things bout a 97 vette ls1? My friend swapped one into his 94 v6 camaro, just tryin to get some info on them.

ALOT of 97 LS1's had thin castings, over time causing very small oil leaks THROUGH the block, many owners that find this out are way past warrenty and GM refuses to replace the blocks, so they are just left. One 98 LS1 (to my knowledge) has had this problem, namely mine, BUT mine wasn't made apparent until I put a ported pump in, so it leaked alot more than the 97's did.

Not all of them do, but there has been many cases, there is a bulletin about it somewhere. And sometimes the leak isnt noticeable unless the car is running in the same spot for 10 mins. Where it was cast thin usually shows with higher miles just due to pressure from the oil system on the porous section, they will not leak new at all.

Can you tell where it is leaking from? Is it dripping down from above the oil filter? If the filter has oil dripping down it, what you need to do is check above the filter in location circled in the picture below. (It was from the diagnol line that almost cuts the circle in half). That is where mine was leaking from, if its not there, check all your gasket seals and make sure its not coming from those, if it is not, check as many concave corners on the block you can to see if it was cast thin. Hope this helps.

O-ring will only cause an internal leak and low pressure, no leak externally.

at first i thought it was my rear main seal, but actually it looks to be coming from the front of the block near the timing chain cover and just blowing back and dripping from the tranny area also, so hopefully it's just a gasket, it never leaked until after the cam swap so i assume thats a pretty good guess....i've been trying to find some photoluminesent oil dye to put in and see where it's leaking out of but i can't find any. anyone know who carries it?

I bet the front cover gasket just isn't aligned properly then, did you put gasket maker on the base of the block on that area?
