Tranny whines (T56) When I am shifting it into 3rd gear it whines and also when I'm accelarating in any gear after third. Its like a loud whine it almost sound like if it was the rear end gears but it aint. It only does it when its in gear and the clucth is released. It's starting to do it in 2rd gear also. A couple of days ago I added 2 quarts of oil because I didnt realize that it was leaking oil through the back of the tranny. What do you guys think it could be? Any info would really help before I order the transmission overhaul rebuild kit. By the way the car has 120k miles

I would assume your bearings are going out. Because of lack of oil mine did the same thing, and WHAM locked up. Luckily no gears etc, just bearings. Be prepared for a rebuild soon, so start looking early.

How long you operated with low oil will dictatae the extent of the damage. 2 qts low is 50% of the oil missing. Beside the lube of the bearings and gears , the oil cools the trans. A gear noise can be a sign of excessive gear wear due to lube and cooling deficiencies. I suspect you may not get an easy fix here.

a t-56 uses 4qts of oil? I am taking the tranny off tomorrow. Does anyone know how you can tell how bearing are bad? I am going to take it to my engine builder since he knows about trannys and all that stuff.
