PTV Clearance with milled 243's and TR224
I just measured my piston to valve clearance with my 243's that are milled 10 thousands that have 2.02 and 1.57 valves. I also have a TR 224 on 114. I measured in increments of 5* from 30* before and after TDC.
Do these numbers look about right?!?!
30*Before TDC = 410
25*Before TDC = 335
20*Before TDC = 275
15*Before TDC = 215
10*Before TDC = 180
5 *Before TDC = 155
TDC = 163
5* After TDC = 190
10*After TDC = 230
15*After TDC = 290
20*After TDC = 375
25*After TDC = 470
30*After TDC = 560
I found exact TDC by putting a piston stop in the spark plug hole when both intake and exhaust valves were closed (I could tell is was about TDC too because of how far I could push the valve down) and then rotated the engine backwards (counterclockwise??). I then marked the spot on the degree wheel. I then rotated the engine in the normal rotation (clockwise??) and then marked a spot on the degree wheel. The position between those two spots is supposed to be exactly where TDC is. That's the correct procedure right?

Just a little reassurance for ya; I have 243's milled .010", and am also using a .010" thinner HG - I do not have PtV clearance issues with my TSP 224R cam (224/224 .581" .581" 114LSA +2 advance). Heads have 2.02/1.57 valves.

i used a dial indicator on top of the valve and got about .085" on the intake and .135 on the exhaust.I could definitly get a bigger cam but it wouldnt be worth it i think,i dont think i could go much bigger and still be comfortable with it.The heads are gm ls2 heads that were ported by Bo white and milled.

OK...I just got back from checking again. I don't know how on earth I got 60 and 65 at TDC before. I've tried to duplicate those results with no avail. I checked a bunch of times and got 179, 109, 170, 175, 165, 185, 174 and 156. These numbers seem a bit high don't they?

i mean for finding top dead center,it seems hard to do with a piston stop.For P/V clearance i just put on a checking spring and install an adjustable pushrod to take out all the lash while bolting the rockers down all the way,Then install a shims to .080 on the intake and .120 on the exhaust and see if you still have room to spare while turning the motor over.just try pushing the valve into the piston with your finger.

Don't my numbers at TDC seem high to anyone though?
179, 109, 170, 175, 165, 185, 174 and 156.
Again my setup is 243's milled .010, with .045 gasket and a TR224 cam on 114.
My lowest numbers ended up being around 2* after TDC. They were usually about 3-6 thousands less than the numbers at TDC.

I have the same cam you do and am thinking about doing the same heads. Who did the heads, or are they just stock & milled? and I would like to see some before heads, after heads dyno #'s if you do them.

Patriot Performance cnc ported, milled .010, and 5 angle valve job. I handfinished them too though. I'll def. be posting my results. I just measured my PTV clearance and it seems to be around 130-140ish on the intake which seems about right?
What kinda numbers did u all have (in regards to ptv clearance) with similiar setups?
