I don't think that there is any relation to the years as far as burning oil goes. Try some synthetic treatment.

i run the dogshit out of mine. that 4k stall never lets the rpm drop under 5,100 when i'm all up in it. it doesn't smoke and/or use ANY oil between changes...i am somewhat baffled.

My 2000 Z28 consumed 1 quart within 800 miles when new while the engine was breaking in. It has not burned any significant amount since. Maybe just under 1/2 a quart every 4000 miles and I drive her pretty hard.

My burned a **** load when I was using M1. Ran some top end cleaner through it and switched to GC 0w30 and it's been doing great so far.

My 2000 Z28 will maybe be down 1/2 quart per oil-change, but only if I've beat the snot out of her...

You guys may want to consider trying a thicker oil. The LS1 really likes a true 30 weight oil at temperature. Some 5W-30 oils are closer to a 20 weight at temperature then a 30 weight. I too had an oil consumption problem. Got a catch can and that stopped dumping oil into the manifold but then I started reading here and over at bobstheoilguy.com based on Patman's advice and I switched oils from M1 5w-30 to German Castrol 0w-30 and my consumption problem stopped. I also stopped getting much oil in my catch can. I'm not saying this will be the same for everyone but it seemed to work for me.

Before switching oils I would burn 1 qt. every 2k miles or so. the GC also seems to have tamed the "sewing machine" sound my engine used to make. I'm not a big believer in miracle treatments but I'm sold on the GC stuff for sure. It might be worth a try.

There are tons of posts on the GC over in the maintenance section or check out the above mentioned site. I also suggest that everyone get's their oil analyzed at the next oil change interval. It's only 20 bucks and gives you a good idea of what your oil is doing to your engine. Blackstone labs is who I use. I don't want to post a link as they are a non sponsor but they are easy enough to find using Google.

I use about 1/2 to 1 qt before I change the oil. Sometimes I change at 3000 other times I change at 5000 miles. It all depends on how hard I run, and I keep an eye on my oil life monitor system. At 3k I am sometimes down 1/2 a qt, and at 5k I have been down 1 full qt. That was doing a lot of hard driving though.
