Default MSD cap and rotor kit..DEAD!

Yes after 1,200 miles DEAD! Confirmed kill in pic below. same exact Ignition that kills Stock caps in 12-14k miles killed the MSD in 1,200

Current settings
MSD Cap and Rotor DOA
MSD Coil
16 year old(I kidd you not) MSD 6T with soft touch
NGK TR6 gapped to .040

EDIT

TO clear up what you are looking at. the black mark on the rotor is NOT supposed to be there. it is a carbon burn clean through the rotor. as dead short to ground when the ignition is trying to fire. The OPTI it self is fine and working great. LOTS of Spark going into the cap but not a damn thing coming out

Is it that little burn mark at the base? That is what caused the engine to stop?
Before I ever blame the Opti , I disconnect the MSD 6 and plug the factory stuff back in, and sometimes you find something else.
Was there carbon tracks inside the cap? Cracks?

LOL yes that black mark is a Carbon burn clean through the rotor. and about 10 seconds after the hood came up I unplugged the MSD and it was still dead.

Lots of spark going in not a damn thing coming out.

To be CLEAR the opti it self is fine

Okay. These Opti designs are a nightmare, and I think the extra HP of that MSD box doesnt help trying to overcome the design of the opti haveing to get spark clear across the rotor.
I am so glad I finally, after 5 or 6 Optis, went to a DELTEQ.

I feel so special I paid extra for this stuff...so I could be dead on the road and pushed off by the guy from the FORD dealer I was near!

"wanna buy a new Cobra?"
"This will blow a Cobra away!"
"before or after we get done pushing it?"

THANKS MSD!

No they are barely good enough for stock...but I do not changing plug on a regular basis so I have to use a MSD to keep them clean

ANother thing to, when Dynaspark puts there Opti out, there instructions give allot of detail in fitment of the Opti. WHen we build our engines, our gaskets/sealants, maching, cams etc etc all change the fitment of the Opti on the Engine. I think that is why some person can have there Opti go over 100k miles, on a stock engine, but modified ones chew them up (of course rpms over 6300 werent meant for stock Optis, as that was the LT4's limit)
The Opti design is flawed and we are paying for it.

Yes we are very careful here to install them correctly and make sure things are lined up properly All to many times you see some one slapp it on and break it real quick

all the ones I have killed have been from carbon tracking the cap till now

I was speaking in general terms for the public. I have installed 2 Dynasparks and after they broke, and I blamed Dynaspark, I found out it was my engine build. The Reluctor ring on my 96 LT1engine had a foreign material in between the ring/crank gear so the thing vibrated the crap out of the Dynaspark, and now with the DELTEQ all is good, because I had to tear it down and already had the DELTEQ in waiting. But nevertheless, **** happens.

Is it even worth having the MSD 6AL? I'm starting to hear way more bad than good about having it. Now that I think about it Ive never heard anything good like gains etc. At what point is one needed? I dont want to lose my Dynaspark because of this pos.

the msd is an engine life saver. The soft touch rev limiter is a good safety net for people that race around thier red line.

Got any pics of the inside of the cap?

I know the spark is going to follow the least resistive path, but why that was down the side of the rotor is beyond me.

Almost looks like the spark jumped from the tip of the rotor to the side of the rotor and traveled down to the optical pickup disc.

Any tracking to a specific cylinder on the cap? Just for s**** and giggles I would read the resistance of the plug wires, maybe one is a higher resistance and the spark occasionaly found another way to ground.

Concerned because I just put this cap on my car, and have been preaching about how good the rotor design is compared to stock.

[EDIT]
Just thought of something else. Since the MSD 6 is a capacitive discharge, I'm wondering if the spark duration is too long for the opti? Fires one cylinder, and still has some spark in it as the rotor is between two cylinders. You would still think the spark would jump to the nearest brass post though. <scratches head>

Just got off the Phone with MSD. I will be sending it back so they can cut it apart. The burn mark starts at the screw that holds the rotor together. We will know more when they get done.

I know how you feel BTW I have put a few of these on customer cars after telling them how great they are.

My Delteq should get here today. I just need to get the other MSD parts coming!
