Default HELP - I need advise on buying a new transmission

I have a 98 A4 Trans Am with 97k miles on it. My tranny keeps slipping over 40 mph. At 70mph, I hit redline on slight hills. I expect I may need a new tranny or at least enough work done on it where I might as well get a new one.

I need advise on what kinds of upgrades or different trannys that I should ask for. I am taking it to my local Cottman Transmission. If anyone knows a good prebuilt that I can get shipped for a good price, that would be good too.

I need it to handle 500 rwhp. I would like the best 1/4 mile accell I can get without sacraficing mpg highway (so I need overdrive).

That website doesn't work. I did find it on Google though. Maybe it's just down.

Hey Steve... this is Dave at Rock-On transmissions. We have a very reliable tranny for you. It is vacuum modulated, our level 4. This tranny is very streetable, very aggressive on the high band. Our level four is well suited for your horse-power range and it has room to grow if necessary. Give us a call and we can talk about your set up and get you taken care of. Hope this helps... Dave

I've heard nothing but good things about Rock-On trannies. I also really like my transmission, a 4L60E from Coan Racing.

What is a 700R4? Would that be a good option? Are there any other good trannys besides the 4L60E that have a 4th gear?

Sure there are several ways to get over drive, 4L80E is one that is a really good option ...kinda pricey for the conversion. there are a few with th400 with an gear vendors overdrive unit. Some use the th 200-4R then you have the 700r4, these two IMHO can be a PITA to convert too.
When your talking about 500 hp, and looking for a good all around daily driver and want 1/4 mile acelleration, you can't go wrong with a performance built 4L60E, these units hold up very well in the 500-700 rwhp range, and can take a pretty good lick from nos, should you decide to go that route...I hope this helps ..Dave

Thanks for all the help everyone. I have decided to go with a Mad Dog Punisher 4l60e. It was $1495 with converter, cooler, and shipping. They claim it's safe up to 550 hp.

Sweet, I just talked to the guy and I am going with the "Godfather " tranny. Suppose to be good up to 700hp. No need for the verter and cooler so it came out to $1645 shipped. Not bad.

you get what you pay for.......Dave @ Rockon bought one of his trannies back that a guy was selling on here used. It was 700 bux and I asked "why?" He said because he had more money in parts than 700.00 in it.

Honestly, I don't know enough about trannys to say whether Rock-on is worth the extra money. Maybe it is. It was just out of my budget.

I'll let everyone know what I think of my MadDog. It gets installed today.

I just got my car back with my new MadDog Punisher 4l60e tranny. This thing shifts like a punch in the face. My wife complains it "hurts", but she says that about when I drive her stick too, so I think that means it's doing it right.

It gets a big thumbs up from me so far. Of course, the real test is how it stands up to time (and time trials).

My experience with buying racing parts so far is that you get what you pay for. And sometimes, when you pay less, you end up really paying more because you end up replacing that part with what you should have bought in the first place. Let us know how that tranny works out though, that sounds like a really great deal on a 4L60E.

What shift did you get? The 1, 2 or 3? I was looking at the "godfather" 4L60E they offer.
Also, do they come vacum modulated? I heard those are better.
