Default Body Side Moulding... can it come off?!

Does it come off fairly easily? Whats the best way to take it off?

It comes off, but is a pain and takes some time. The glue can take a long time to get off. I used fishing line to take mine off.

Agree with minytrker...

Just take your time and use a heat gun and it will eventually come off.

The second day I had my car I took mine off! Looks 1000% better!

We used dental floss to get them off. That was the easy part. Getting the glue off the paint was the hard part. It took us 4 hours! A friend with a detail shop helped me do it, and so he had a lot of different chemicals at his disposal to help clean it up. But for the most part, we had to just roll the glue off the paint with our thumbs very very slowly.

You can get a popsicle stick and smooth down one of the ends and it makes for a great glue remover. Just get under a piece of glue and then move it along with one hand and then peel back the ends of the glue with the other hand. It makes it alot easier!

good tip!

when you say smooth it down, you just mean with like a fine grit sand paper?

Yeah just make the edges a lil more rounder and make the end a little bit thinner so it is easier to get under the glue.

Heat gun...never in one spot for a long time though....then a plactic popsicle stick..or something non-abrasive.

Take your time...it''l be worth it. Clean the old residue....no big deal. Make sure you use a soft colth to clean it off.

Nah nah nah, use 3m adhesive remover. It takes almost no time at all and doesn't damage paint. I used it to pull the molding off of my F-Body, just ripped it off sprayed the glue and it turned soft and pliable. Use your fingernail and lightly scrape. Spray again pull glue off again, it is sticky and comes off super easily plus it sticks to itself more than the paint.

After it came off, and I mean all of it, I sprayed the remover on a terry cloth and "washed" the part that had the glue on it. Then soap and water, plus a hose to spray the chemical stink away.

The stuff is also useful for pulling off all the residue from those annoying GM "warning" sticker. You can buy it at Wal-Mart for ~$. One can, can demold 20 cars and fumigate 10 orphanages.

Damn, honestly try the adhesive remover and the terry cloth, it turns the glue to sticky puddy. It took like ~30 min both sides. That including a bit of rubbing compound application for the parts where dirt and water "infected" the adhesive making it nasty on the paint.

One thing to keep in mind, the older the car the longer it will take to remove the adhesive. That's why it took forever to clean up the adhesive on my 98. It would be much easier to clean it up on a 2003 or 2004.

Yeah the older it gets, especially in a bad weather region, the more you are going to need to use a rubbing compound and wax.

Though I did my 1999 Camaro back in the summer 2005 and I didn't bother with the compound. Completely undiscernable from uncovered regions; though that is with a pewter metallic car and not a gloss. Pewter is forgiving.

True

-Leave in sun
-use 3m adhesive remover or goo gone or something similar
-use dental floss or some form of non-abrassive/sharp object to not harm paint
-tear off BSM
-peel off left-over adhesive with fingers/nails/fishing line
-clean appropriately
-buff out with rotary
-wash and admire your work

Mine is Black and it still came out great. Just take your time and get it all off carefully.

Good Luck

!body molding makes it look much cleaner. This was a neat way for me to find out that my car had been repainted. One color on the door, one color under the body molding

Believe it or not... ONE of my doors was fine, the other has a SLIGHTLY different shade of yellow under it You can even feel it with your fingernail it's like tape... but it doesn't come off

I got mine done tonight, I used WD40 on the adhesive, fishing line to get them started and then just pulled them off, car does look 100000% better, even with a "shadow" of one on a door. I'm going to take it to a body shop to see if they can do anything to it
