Quoted for a cam install...need opinions.
Ok i was quoted for a cam install today. This is with the shop orderin everything and putting it all in. Stock springs and rockers he said around 1100, with 1.6 rrs and new springs he said about 1600 or so. What you guys think?
Oh, btw, its a cc305. Im not doin heads so im not lookin for a huge cam.
Thats everything. I take my car there, wait a couple of days, then drive it home.
Im not gonna do it myself. Dont wanna tackle somethin like that without a garage or the knowledge to do it. I could probably gain the knowledge, but i m not gonna build a garage

I guess it sounds good but I wouldn't do it. Is it your DD? If it's not I would do it yourself. If you have the cash to spend by all means. but you could always do someother sweet mods while at it and while you have it in the garage!
oh wait. I just read you don't have a garage? have any friends with garages?

It is my DD, and i plan on doin the springs and 1.6rrs. Im really not gonna do it myself, and i dont think theres anything anyone can say to convince me. Im not doin heads or anything, because when you start doin that stuff, other things need to be done. When i start getting into the power i wanna do it right. A cam should make me happy for now power wise.
I should be able to hit around 330-340 with this cam and bolt ons right? Thats what ive seen if i remember right.

Honestly, you haven't done nearly enough research for a cam swap yet. And if this mechanic you're bringing your car to even considered putting stock springs back on with that cam (I'm assuming he did since he gave you that quote) then you need to never go back there and find someone who knows what they're doing, fast. IMHO you're better off with some gears (4.10 for M6/ 3.73 for A4), LCA and relocation brackets. If you don't know anything about those, search on them. If you get a cam, you're going to need a lot more than just new springs and RR. I'm doing a cam swap right now and it's really in depth and required weeks of reading and buying all the parts. If you want more power, then new springs, 1.6 RR, and an electric wp should be good enough for now, but I think you'd like the gears more, and they're cheaper. Get a different shop to install them though cause that guy has no idea what he's doing with that car.

the shop does not know enough about the cam that you are putting in, did you go over the specs with them? For them to suggest stock springs is not good. I would find a more knowledgable place to do the work.
I would also get a detail quote, it may be to your benefit to order the parts yourself and take to them, I would ask them if that affects their labor portion.
The thinking here is they may be upcharging on the parts cost b/c if there is problems you will return to them and they will have to fix it or they might upcharge the labor side to cover that possibility too. but if the labor is the same either way, save some money if they are upcharging the parts.

This shop is definatley capable. The guy is doing pretty much all of the builds on my local board.
I just asked him for the p/n's for everything he priced out for me. Ill post them up when he gives them to me. And i will shop around.
