Default Camaro gear question???

I have a question for the Camaro gang. My friend has a 97 Z28 w/ the automatic and factory 2.73 gears. He wants to do a gear swap but is unsure of which setup to go with. I suggested 3.73s but he doesn't want to sacrifice much gas mileage and feels a 3.42 setup would be better. What do you guys think, 3.73 or 3.42? Is there any noticed gas decrease between the two? <Thanks, Paul

If he wants anything above 3.23's, he is going to have to get a Series 3 Carrier. Basically he is going to have to get a new Rear plus the Gears he wants anything above 3.23. I have 3.73's, and the gas mileage isn't that bad.

he can get 3.42's or 3.73's for a 2 series carrier.. the gears just have to be specific for a 2 series carrier.. there is a difference in ring thickness..

If you can get the Gears, then go for it.

I don't know much about Camaro performance parts but how much do you think it would cost total with the new carrier? I know the gears alone are $177.95 out of Summit. I think it would be a great mod for him...he simply does not understand how much different 3.73s are from his 2.73s.

depends on the carrier... and also does he hate noise or doesnt care... you can get another eaton posi or auburn... but if you want power to the ground performance go with the Detroit Locker... its alittle noisy, but its 100% power to both wheels all the time... its around 500 smackers though...
remember its only money... and 3.73 will wake that car way up...

Good luck driving that Locker in a Rain storm. Basically a welded Differential. My Auburn Pro Series is rated for 500hp/tq. It is quiet, and it was $503 with the Shim Kit.

I reccomend 4.10 gears. Tell your friend dont fear the gear.
