What causes a backfire?

What causes a backfire? I just got my car tuned and it was fine the first few days but now if I give it a rev or just bring the rpm's up to 4,000 in gear and let off it backfires( or in other terms pops about 3 times) Any ideas?

Sometimes I like to downshift to where the the rpms are kinda high like 4k, then let it fall from there as I slow down, just so I can hear the exhaust...gets my rocks off...but sometimes it backfires and im pretty sure its from all the fuel loadin up then combusting as artic stated
