Default Opinions on running cats or not......

I am tradin my exhaust to 11secLS1 for his slp headers. when i eventually put the headers on, should i put some high flow cats on it, or just leave them off altogether. i want it to sound good. i dont want a lot of popping. will it sound like crap with no cats. all opinions welcome.

Depends on what type of catback you’re going to run with it. Some sound great with an ORY and others don’t. If you are sticking with the Corsa, then it will sound very good.

Personally, I think that it sounds and definately smells a lot better with cats. I put the hi-flow Random Techs on mine. It wasn't that much more money, and you don't hardly lose any power. My car sounded A LOT better after I put the cats on, but every setup is different. Plus, you don't have to buy O2 sims. If you have a pretty quiet catback, I don't think the rasp is as bad. Just my opinions. Good luck.

thanks for the replies...actually i am trading the corsa for the headers. i will most likely put some cats on there, cause i have heard some without the cats and i thought it sounded like poo. and i am not too fond of smelly stuff coming from my car. thanks again.

what about, in a true dual setup, if i ran no cats, an x-pipe and some bullets right before the axel. is that going to pop a lot, or would it sound ok?

My slp's are orp with a hooker catback and I get compliments on the sound all the time. The smell is another issue however, I say get rid of the cats for the extra few ponies.

I heard that combo(Corsa/no cats) and it rasped like he!! on acceleration. Not a good tone at all. It's pretty much a given that most aftermarket cat-backs will be raspy without cats on the LS1(some are just better/worse than others).

I'd recommend highflow cats just because the car sounds and smells so much better. No cats if it is a track only car though.

Most hi-flow catalytic converters do not take away hardly any horsepower, if you get good ones.

I've heard quite a few catbacks that sound good with an ORY. Exhaust note is very subjective though.

Loudmouth and Borla are the only two that I find to sound really bad with an ORY.

My main gripe about running cats is you don't get the benefits of turning off COTs in LS1Edit. With the Converter Over Temp protection on it has been proven to richen your a/f mix in the high rpm range sacrificing a substantial amount of hp. I've heard anywhere from 12hp to 20hp.

Now, give me a mod that adds that type of horsepower for the click on one button (COTS = FALSE), and I'm there!

I have slp exhaust with gutted cats and it smells like *** if the wind is blowing in the right direction. Also get ses with the sims about once a month for a day or two then it goes away.

Go with no cats if your state doesn't do emission testing. If you have LS-1edit, you won't need sims, just turn off codes P0140 and P0160 (the codes for the 2 rear O2 sensors). I kept my stock SS muffler, and it sounds stock under normal driving. Can't really tell a difference until you get into the gas pretty heavy.

NO CATS!

IMO, our cars sound much better without them. I've gotten many compliments on my exhaust.

I agree with RPM WS6 that it depends on which catback you run. If it's a tame one on an otherwise stock car, then it'll sound ok. I was in the same boat as you, trying to decide to run cats or an ORY. I decided to run an ORY and see how it worked out, and if I didn't like it, I would replace it with a catted Y and sell the ORY. Once I heard my car with the ORY on, I haven't changed it out since. The smell isn't all that bad, you'd have to be sitting in traffic with your windows down and the wind blowing towards the front of your car to notice it. I love the way my exhaust sounds running through my Magnaflow muffler. Good luck with the decision!
