Question About to get a tune, what to do?

I'm about to get a mail order tune. I know to send in the specs of the cam, exhaust, octane rating. What else do I need to give them? I know I need the !EGR and !AIR delete, but what else is there that I can do with it?

Dont give them anything. Get a REAL local tune, unless you dont really care. I dont care what anyone says, you cant get close from a mail order tune unless you are lucky. I would rather spend the money doing it all right.

I second that!

Only reason to get a mail order tune would be to get the car to at least run and be in 'safe mode' after an install - just to get you to the shop that is gonna do the proper dyno tune.

ok so you mean a real tune from a local shop, not a dyno tune right? i don't have enough for a dyno tune.

The only 'real' tune IS a dyno tune so that they can properly dial in A/F ratio, etc. based on readings from wideband.

Unless you know of a shop that will install a WB O2 setup for you & drive around in your car with a laptop and log your values - then tune - go back and drive again - the tweak tune, etc.

They could change paramters such as !EGR, !A.I.R., Fan Settings, Tranny Settings at a shop from a laptop (or you could do some of those items yourself using a Diablo Predator Handheld Tuner for eg.) - but to properly tune the engine you will need the WB O2 readings.

If you are going to do major mods other than bolt-ons you should always plan on $500 for a good thorough dyno tune in your budget before doing any of the modifications. It sounds like a lot right now, but depending on what parts you have installed it could mean the difference between a sweet running, powerful engine and a blown engine!

i'll just save up for now i guess... mail order tune for now just to get it running right, only 75 bucks, and couldn't possibly run any worse than it is already. has cam, heads, exhaust and intake manifold, programmed by vinci programmer but the cam is just outside of how far the prgrammer can go.

With the capability of the tuning software available for these cars, I'd think you can do a pretty good DIY job of it in combination with a wideband.

well, i just bought this car because i was tired of having a project, i just want something fun to drive. not looking to spend a lot of money to get it running exactly *perfect*. however, if a mail order tune has the possibility of hurting my car, i won't do it.

where are you located?
if you are near charlotte, I recommend Nick Williams or Alvin@pcmforless or Mike (WS6FirebirdTA00) up on these boards.
near raleigh i would recommend RPM (Ryans performance machines)
CAM(carolina motorsports)- can sometimes be bad, but recently had 2 guys go there and there cars put out some good numbers so I will no longer say its bad.

When I installed my ATI on the other T/A, I used a custom tune downloaded to my Diablo to get the car running half decently - then drove SLOWLY to the reputable tuner in the next state to get the 'correct' tune. Worked for me.

and BTW Girls = Me just loves girls that get into wrenching on the car - as long as they don't resemble Goober the mechanic from Mayberry the rest of the time
