Default Problems After Header Install ......... Please Help!!!

I installed MAC headers about a month ago with Random Tech Cats in the Y-Pipe. After I drive about 40 miles or so, there is black **** ALL OVER my bumper!!! This pisses me off very badly because my bumper is white and I have to wax it to get all the **** off!!!

Also, when I start the car cold, black **** shoots out of my exhaust like crazy. I know that it is not carbon because it didn't do it before the headers. Also, it is A LOT of black stuff.

I never had either of these problems before the headers. I think that I am running really rich. Has anyone had these problems or know what these problems are? If so, please let me know what I need to do.

Thank you.

If you have or know someone with A-Tap or and OBD II system tester you might want to see what your long term fuel trims readings are, I think .880 -.910 are what your shooting for.

No, I do not have a MAFT, but it sounds like I maybe getting one. I might buy Predator while I am at it. I had my mechanic test the OBD II system the other day, and he said that my LTFT's were 18% rich, and he reset the computer to see if that would help things, but it is still doing it. Why do headers make it run so rich? I have read a lot of stuff on here before, but I don't recall ever reading WHY they caused that.

Thanks for the replies.

Mine did the same thing.. I was told the car needed time to adjust, meaning the computer. After about 3 or 4 weeks the black **** wasnt as bad. Mine is having a hard time restarting hot. <img border="0" alt="[bang head]" title="" src="graemlins/gr_banghead.gif" /> Almost like vapor lock. Cold starts no problem. I brought it up here and was told to do the throttle bypass and it would fix it. I am going to be doing this over the weekand. Good Luck

This is just a thought, but could the O2's be confused with the new high flow cats. Or worse, damaged in some way that the computer doesn't realize it?

The O2's that affect Air/Fuel Mixture are before the CAT's. I'm pretty sure the CAT's would have no effect on the O2's at all.

Thanks for the good info Mustang Hat'r. I have thought about LS1 Edit, but I really don't think that I am proficient enough to actually know what I'm doing with it. I also don't have the laptop and I don't have Autotap. What I like about Predator, is that I won't need a laptop, and it can tune AND give me readings. For now, I will probably have to get a MAFT, so that I can adjust my base setting and get this thing leaned out. In a couple of months I will have enough money to get Predator and then I can tune my WOT.

30th brother, you need to autotap that bad boy and get some tuning. There is lots of information out there about LS1 Edit and what information to change in your computer. Its kind of like when you first learned how to use a computer, did it not suck at first but got easier? Kind of a stupid analogy but you understand what I'm saying. You need to maximize your mods, plus you don't want to foul your plugs.

Good luck
