Any one ever had valve guide problems in these cars causing oil consumption??

Any one ever had valve guide problems in these cars causing oil consumption?? Just curious if anyone has ever had any valve guide problems in these cars if so let me know what the symptoms were. i have a friend that thinks his valve guides might be bad in this car i know the usual like smoking on start up but are there anyother symptoms i wouldhate to tell him this is the problem and then it not be it. btw his plugs come out of the motor fine no trace of oil.
