Thinking about ditching the fbody...
So far I've owned two ls1's and it's not that I'm getting bored but I need something different. My current 98 Z has a pretty good modlist and its not something I like driving around town (loud, huge converter, everything rattles, etc).
Recently I've been thinking about selling the car and buying a z06. I was just wondering if I could get some people's honest opinions about the car: the difference in years, performance, cost, etc. I live in Chicago and Fbody's are a dime a dozen it would be nice to have something else for a change that not TOO many people have.
By the way, is there a specific write about on here somewhere that will give me some more info...im looking for specifics regarding the years etc. Thanks for any opinions in advance.

These are two stickies, they'll answer a lot of your questions. From a previous FBod owner, switched to a 04 Z06, I can tell you that you'll never regret the change. The power is awesome straight outta the box. Mine never had one rattle whatsoever. Simply by adding a 100 shot, and you're gonna be right with the new Z06's. They're street manners are phenomenal, and once you stomp her, she'll roar like a wicked beast. Trust me, You won't regret the upgrade. Good luck with your decision!

I own a 94 f-body and a 01 Z06. The two are night and day. The Z06 is twice the car and twice the fun in every way. You will never regret the change, in fact, you will wonder what took you so long. Good luck.

few random thoughts and suggestions for you:
buy in the fall/winter. seasonal fluctuations on 'vette prices are significant
try to find a car that has or is eligible for extended warranty from GM ("GM protection plan") - repair costs are crazy, not so bad if you do the work yourself but parts are still expensive. there are some dealers that sell extended warranty with little markup, your local dealer will try to charge you through the roof for it, shop around.
there are going to be a few rattles here and there, but not as bad as f-body and they are usually easily fixable.
'02 and up have HUD standard - EXTREMELY useful feature.
as far as differences in ride and handling - night and day compared to f-body, but you have to test drive one - it's hard to put in words. you feel much more connected to the road somehow. you can go to a local roadcourse from day one, no mods required (maybe some extra oil)

I just upgraded to a C5, non Z06, and the difference truly is night and day. Just the feeling of coming on/off an onramp will leave a smile on your face until the next stoplight. I mean, in a straight line, a regular C5 is just barely ahead of an F-body, or in some cases behind. But in every other aspect, wow...just an unbelievable difference.

Sold my 01 Z28 with 224 cam & headers. I bought a new C6. The C6 was defintely slower until I put on some LG long tube headers. Now it feels as quick as the Z28, but smoother.

I'm enjoying my C5 Z06. Go for it. They are priced quite well these days.
Keeping the car stock? Go for an 02 Z06.
figure around 29 grand as a guestimate.
Watch over at www.z06vette.com as the guys are planning to pick up the new C6 Z06 and they sell their c5 Z

i plan on getting a 03 Z06 to take place of my 99 LS1 h/c camaro due to a dumbass kid running a stop sign and crashing into me. you said f-bods are a dime a dozen in chicago? I live in the Rolling Meadows area and u dont see too many NICE fbods. if u do u see some and the ones u see are either stock or "riced out" or even people who do not know or have the right taste in modifing these kind of cars. i think why i miss mine so much is that the car owned this god damn town, lol. but i think with the new Z06, nothin to worry about, hehe. good luck man, i cannot wait till i get my hands on one

I just got my 02 Yellow Z06 yesterday... I had sold my buddy my 99 Z28, so i got to run my old car. We both knew the Z was faster and it is. Both are great cars, but there is something about driving a vette, that you dont get in an f-body. I wont look back. I notice alot of older 30-40 y/o women looking... probably looking for that sugar daddy haha
note the sig, it was about going from a f-body to a z06

Test drive if you can, you will be sold.
Pretty much everything has been said.
The Vette was/is one of my dream cars. Its got nice upgraded components (for GM) and is an amazing bargain right out of the box.
