i have a friend with a 98 TA, and they decided to block off the EGR valve by cutting a piece of aluminum and sticking it in one of the hoses. im wondering if thats going to cause anything to go wrong. the SES light already came on but if thats the only ill effect hes not going to worry about it. thanks in advance

Well....sort of. It's a non-combustible gas that's being reintroduced into the combustion chamber and acts as a buffer to inhibit spark knock, thereby allowing the engine to make better use of more timing. If I remember correctly, it also reduces NOX.
