Default Is it necessary to replace spark plug wires when installing long tube headers?

This may be a dumb question but give me a break if it is. I am going to be installing some lg long tube headers on a ls6. Should I replace the spark plug wires? I have heard mixed thaughts about this. Why would you need to replace the stock wires? Heat? If I do need to replace the stock wires which ones are best to go with? Thanks.

I'd say that if you're putting on headers, it's going to be the easiest time to access the plugs and wires. So you may as well put on new plugs if you haven't before, and new wires at the same time can't hurt. Just make sure the wires snap in securely, new or not.

Also, check the wires for wear, cracking, fraying, melting, etc. That'll tell you for sure if they should be replaced.

yes can't hurt, I would, you can get away with not changing them. hey also thier is a huge button in the upper right called SEARCH give it a whirl, this way you won't ask which kind people are running. well, I will save you some time taylor thunder volts or msd's ngk tr55's at .050-.055 if nitrous or cam then tr6 at .036-.038 that should do it. Hate to take anger out on you but you have got to understand I have answered this question like 100 times my self on here.

Thanks for the quick reply's! I am new to the website so I didnt realize this question had been worn out so much. I have a cam so I guess I should go with the msd ngk tr6's at .036-.038 You guys think the stock plugs are fine?

MSD and Taylor make the wires.
NGK makes the plugs.

Stock plugs are probably o.k. for your application, best way to find out though is to pull the ones that are in there and give them a look-see, that will tell you more then anyone on here will be able to with the info you've provided.

Might as well do the plugs and wires while your doing the swap. I went with NGK iridiums at .055 and MSD wires, make sure the wires are off your headers, they will melt

Are you saying anyone that has upgraded their cam should run the cooler tr6 plugs? I have always heard that was recommended when using nitrous, but never heard that for just a cam upgrade. Maybe I need to search more...

It just depends. Depending on Dynamic compression and camshaft overlap ect ect a TR6 plug might be ideal. Then again there are folks out there running TR55's or equivalent also. Just depends on your combo.

Seems like more people are going TR-6 N/A right now. I think that the colder plugs are working out nice in my non-sprayed car. Plus it is ideal to change the plugs if the headers are off.

Another thought is if you ever considered poly motor mounts, NOW is the time to do it while the headers are out.

How would z06 wires (besides color I believe) differ in any performance aspect over the stock ones?

I figured people just get which color they like best seeing as how there really is no measurable gain from plug wires.

I'm getting MSD wires but I want them because they are red (I like red) and they are better quality then Accel.

Not necessary, but why wouldn't you. They are already off the car and need to be reinstalled. For $50 for some MSD wires, why not.

is it necessary for me to drink my own urine..no but its sterile and i like the taste!!

there is absolutly nothing wrong with the stock wires. i put my stock wires back on after 2 header installs a cam install and as soon as im done putting this new motor in im putting the stock wires back on. Now with that said, if for some reason i break a wire im not going to go spend $20 for a new one at the dealership ill spend the $50 or so for some MSDs or taylors, just makes more sense to me.

I actually meant to type FI, must have still had my looking for a new cam on my mind, so I spit out cam, but Koss followed up with the real cam explaination even better. I also say it depends on...... your set up. this still should be moved to external? No?

I did not change my wires when I did my LT's, but the wires had about 8000 miles on them.
