i know the sounds you are talking about. i have an 02 z with the lm, but mine only makes those sounds when its cold. is yours all the time?

I have a 98ss with the m6. I put the slp loudmouth on it. I like the sound of it but would like to get rid of the popping, backfiring on the downshift. Does anyone have any comments or videos or sound clips? I was thinking the dynomax bullet or the borla xr1 . I dont care about cost. I want the best sound. I still want it to sound mean as hell.

the bullet muffler is the way to go for price. I think that the borla sounds better but more $$$.
also 2 flowmaster race mufflers right before the tips could work as well.

Thanks for the reply. How much is the dynomax bullet. I really dont care about price just some good sound. I dont want it too quiet just sweet sounding.

Its not all the time...just when I downshift. It doesnt backfire all the time but quite often.

It's normal for manuals. My friend has an '02 Firehawk and his does it when he downshifts. The bullet muffler should help. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Smile]" src="gr_stretch.gif" />

I have the lm on my 02 z auto and it doesnt really backfire just sounds mean as hell.I like it alot.I have on order GTP stage 2 heads MTI X1 cam and my headers should be here soon-Hooker with off y.I will switch the resonator to two bullet muffs when I get the cam installed.You can pick them up fairly cheap at meineke.

Sweet98SS, The Dynomax aluminized bullets are around $35 from Jegs, but the Borla XR-1's run $150+ I'm assuming the Borlas are stainless for that kind of money, but I'm not sure.

This may sound like a stupid question, but why do you need to down shift all the time? Is it during a panic stop? All you accomplish by down shifting is excessive wear and tear on your shifter, clutch, pressure plate, engine rings, basically your whole drive train. When I see that I'm going to have to stop ahead I just drop her into neutral and start coasting and then use the brakes to bring her to a stop. Brake pads are alot cheaper and easier to replace than the aforementioned components. It might have sounded cool with your stock exhaust but now that you have the Loudmouth just stop downshifting. Problem solved and it won't cost you a penny. Try it, you'll like it. <img border="0" alt="[bang head]" title="" src="graemlins/gr_banghead.gif" />

I downshift to get in the power band.

Right, but you should be able to up your rpm's without having to drag down the engine first.Push in the clutch as you're raising the R's with the gas pedal and shifting to the next lower gear in one smooth motion. Sorry if I make it sound so easy but I'm just an old Fart that's been driving a stick shift for 41 years, it'll come to you eventually.

The LM tends to pop and backfire (especially when cold) whenever you are running it a little hard. I would upshift, and it would sorta pop. I think it has to do with the resinator having nothing in it. At least a Bullet has some packing to absorb the small backfires. I just drove and enjoyed the sounds. If you leave it in gear to decel and its cold it will backfire like a ****. With LT's and ORY it will occassionally spit fire. <img border="0" alt="[evil]" title="" src="graemlins/gr_devil.gif" />

I can't speak to my loudmouth popping when cold because I've never driven it when it wasn't thoroughly warmed up to operating temperature. I can say that it backs off very sweetly for the millisecond that I'm between gears during accelleration. <img border="0" alt="[USA]" title="" src="graemlins/patriot.gif" />
