Default looking to buy a 4th gen bird - any suggestions?

I'm just going in to college, and I want to buy a fun car, and after tons of research, it looks like the firebird is my final choice! I was wondering if there are any years to avoid, or any tips on reliability. with my price range ~$4000 i noticed i can get an older (1994) formula, or a little bit newer (1997) v6 bird. for reliability, is the 3.8l v6 better or the lt-1? also, whats the gas mileage like on the lt-1?

Thanks so much for your help

go 8 or go home.. fuel mileage is obviously worse with a lt1 as opposed to the 6er..my old 96 lt1 6-speed with 4.10 gears would get around 15-17 mpg in normal driving conditions.

I could get around 25 mpg with my 94 Formula. It's an auto with 2.73 gears. To me, a v6 f-bod is pointless. In reality they don't have much room and don't have many features. The v8 is the whole point in buying one of these cars.
