Default To Gut Cats or Not To Gut Cats?

LONG POST! (If you don't like reading just vote)

Ok first off I know I should do what I really want when it comes down to it. I'm just looking for opinions and peoples experiences.

Currently my setup is shorties and a custom fabbed 2.5" Y-pipe with Random Tech. Hi-Flow Cats. Then merged into an I-Pipe and welded into a LM Resonator and then dumped. (Keeping exhaust system for smog every two years.)

So I'm currently installing a TR224/224-112 cam with Patriot Perf. Ported 853 heads and LT's.... and lots of other goodies

I originally planned on going custom true dual's with an X-Pipe, Hi-Flow Cats, and two LM Resonators then dumped (I like the tone of the resonator.)

So finally to the question should I buy some cheap cats and gut them out and replace the Hi-Flow cats in my original plan? Will it be too raspy? Oh and the reason why I'm considering this is just in case a 5-0 needs to see that I'm running them. Yes this is gonna be a loud system... which I like!
Thanks!

I dont think its worth it to go through the trouble of buying cats just to gut them. Besides these arent like the old school, suitcase sized cats on early cars, I dont think your loosing much power with them. And you do live in california, the emisions capital of the universe.
But on the other hand I think it would sound awsome!

f-bodies rasp. it just happens. it's the LS1. if you want that rasp to be amplified, gut your cars. gutted cats/ORY's will NEVER find their way on MY car. i want my car to sound good, not be overly loud, annoying, raspy and smell like gasoline.

remove them or keep them...don't bother 'gutting' them.[or any others]

Id keep them, especially since your in CA, it will give the car a little more tone to it and will barly hurt performance if any a few HP

i don't have to worry about emissions as i will be swapping my other system on every two years
i want the cats to be there (if they're gutted or not) so the friendly 5-0 doesn't report my ***
you guys really think it will sound that bad? yes it's basically straight pipes but with gutted cats and resonators.... would think my H/C would clean up the tone as well though

Just an FYI - when considering removing your catalytic converters from your car, the owner should realize that tampering/removing cats (on a public street driven car) IS a 'Federal' offense.

Agree.

Good to see I'm not the only one who doesn't want their LS1 to sound like a pissed off garbage truck.

alrighty so i looks like it's pretty much settled.... I'll just stick with my original plan and keep it a clean, defined tone..... I've heard that garbage truck sound and I for sure don't want that

Thanks for you help guys!

Wait, I'm confused. Are you going with true duals or not?

True duals don't need cats to eliminate rasp. ORY, on the other hand, will rasp without them.

If you already have good flowing CATS I see no reason at all to cut them, you won't see any HP gains and tonal quality of the exhaust will suffer - yes even with duals. Although less common you still hear Corvette owners complaining about rasp yet they have duals. Also if you are running LM resonators the volume will be OTT without CATS.

It is going to sound insane! I had my macs mids with gutted cats running through the slp lm with the 232/238 112lsa cam in my sig and it sounded soooo good and mean. Dont listen to people who say it sounds like a garbage truck as they probabyl havent heard it before. Its not for the faint of heart, and has a real old school muscle car sound/idle, which i loved, but with the resonators it gets REAL loud inside the car. I swapped mine out for a magnaflow catback because I was getting a headache after 15 mins of driving in my car so it will be loud, but I got nothing but compliments on my car with the lm. Its up to you but if its a daily driver it will get on your nerves after a while. Good luck though and sounds like you have a real nice setup!

yes these are going to be custom true duals w/ and X-pipe and trying to decide whether to go hi-flow cats or buy some cheap ones and gut them.... i figured since it's true duals, rasp would be minimal
