Default Narrowing a 17x9 ZR1 to a 17x6?

Can it be done? Is it worth it?

I realized tonight how much I HATE having to swap tires back and forth for the track.
My front tires are about done and I'm thinking about sending my front 17x9 chrome ZR1s out to be narrowed to a 17x5.5 or 17x6. Has anyone done this? Would this take a significant amount of weight out of the fronts to make them a 'streetable' skinny tire? With M/T supposedly releasing the et street radial in a 315/35/17 soon, I thought I'd keep my 17x11s in the back and run these all the time. The car isnt a daily driver and is more of a toy. What do you guys think of narrowing the fronts and do you think this will be a good setup for the track as well? I'd hope to cut some solid 1.6x 60's on the 315s when they are available.
I really like the look of chrome zr1s, but I thought this would be a good alternative to the norm. OR I could buy a set of 17x6 / 16x10 RR10 Bogarts in a few months...what do you all think?

Dont see a reason why it cant be done, do a search online for wheel widening places and give them a call.

Any reason behind this beside the fact that they're expensive wheels buying them retail?

I know of a place down around dallas that did another local guys wheels he had done up for a c5 vette. I'll send you the contact info SuperC1 once I talk to them tomorrow and see what they have to say about it. I don't really want to run spacers up front. I'd rather keep the look the car has now where the wheel sits in the well though if thats possible.

someone on here had a pair of 16" Chrom firebird wheels done. Also, I remember a white 30th SS convertible that had his stock 16" SS wheels narrowed.

I don't think you will save much on the weight, especially not compared to a Bogart. But it is a cool concept.

Anything can be done.
But as for worth it....How much diff in ET could it possibly gain you. If its all 4 the look and you like it go for it. But it seems like a step back in performance to spend $ to make the car brake and handle worse. Just my opinion.

What tire would you run on that 17x6?? If your ABS is not disabled/removed you could have problems due to not being able to find a tire with similar overall diameter to the rear M.T.s.

I found a cheaper brand tire available on a frequented tire website in a 205/50/17 and it lists the overall diameter at 25.2", the 315s are usually 25.6"~. The 205 I'm referring to weighs 19 lbs. Theres a 10 lb loss to that size tire compared to the 275/40 thats currently on the car. I know that the slp series zr1s are the lightest. I figure around 20 lbs? So say it cut it down to a 15 lb wheel after narrowing, seeing around 15 lbs of loss on ea wheel/tire, 30 lbs of rotational mass off the front end. Decent amount, but jeez the bogarts are sounding better and better. Hey Bogart, wanna make a zr1 replica that weighs as little as the other RR series wheels???

If you can find a place to do it and you're not so much after the cornering and can live with the drag race orientated tire setup, go for it. The weight losses that you are looking at getting from the mod and tire swap will definately help. it's unspring weight, and rotating weight..... both of which make a much larger differnence then just strait weight in the car.

Personally, I went for a set of bogarts, I found them used a few years ago (barely used) and jumped on it. going from stock ws-6 tires and rims, to 15 inch bogart welded r/t, with 26x7.5 MT sportsman fronts, and 26x11.5 et streets netted a 50 lb weight savings alone over the stock wheels and tires.... a definate help.

Default Bump!!!!!

Just sent the guy at weldcraft an email w/ pics of my 17x9 ZR1s to have them narrowed so I can run a 205mm tire on them. I have a manual rack and a spool in the rear so it is a BIIIIIIOOOOOOOOOOOOOOTCH to turn with them. My bogarts are only for the track

I'll post back the price and after pics if I have it done!
