Default Big Cam

okay right now i got a TR 230/224 in but I am looking to go bigger.. But how big is to big.. This car for the most part is a daily driver. I don't want to have to fly cut the pistons.. I have seen the x4 and heard about a possible x5 from LG and a crazy rumor of an "xx" whatever that's supposed to be..

need some suggestions

going for cam only car
but possible to put n2o on at a later date

thanks
dave

Well, DD car is not going to like a huge cam, but hell, you are an M6 and can probably get away with a 240 duration cam. What is wrong with an F14 or the MS4? You still are going to want some low end power/torque, so unless you are running a steep gear I suggest you get some.

IMO: I like a big cammed car that gets driven 5 times a week. Just not for everyone.
You have stock unmodified heads you can fit the G5X4, but just cause it fits doesnt mean that is what you want. I would say drive a car that has something big in it and see if that is still an option.

you can't say you had too much down low, cause I sure as hell don't with that 244/248 cam and 3.42's.

Orangeapeel is right. The only way to know is to drive a big cam car. That way you get a chance to experience the bucking and the agressivenes of them. I know a lot of people on here in your area would love let you see their big cams in action . What it boils down to is personal preference. There is no right or wrong answer when it comes to cam size.

What is it that you don't like about your 230/224 that your wanting to change? Just HP #'s?

I've got the same cam, and have thought about going "bigger" for my daily driver but every time i come to the same conclusion: It's not worth it, you can gain hp at the expense of low-end torque/power and driveability. But on a daily driver, why would you want to? The TR230 can take up to a 150 shot w/o any problems. The torque curve on the cam is amazing. What other supporting mods do you have? With all bolt ons except an UD pulley I nearly put down 400 at the wheels. Thats the same #'s that the F14 are generally putting down, but with excellent driveability (w/ 3.42's) and w/ lower lift (springs last longer).

Now if your wanting your car to be a beast at the track, then go bigger ... but I still haven't found a better cam for an aggressive dailydriver to replace my TR230 in my year of searching

i would say get some good heads and the rest of the boltons first.you should make some decent power and be very driveable with that cam you allready have.

Enough to make 1st gear useless, how much more do you want?

well first gear is pretty much useless now anyways.. haha launching at 5k doesn't leave much room in 1st.. well as for mods pretty much everything but heads and UD pully. put down 376 untuned

not really wanting more HP numbers wanting more aggressive

had this cam in for alomst a year now and well just not feeling it like i used to.. Not wanting to go with heads just yet and NO n2o for me ....yet... just wanting to see what else is out there for a bigger cam other than the MS3-4 and the x4 and what other people are using and what linda reaction they get.

Most of the guys in this town that have a fairly big cam drive autos, so I can't get the real feeling of it

thanks for all the input keep it coming

i'm torn right now also.i have a t2 waiting to go in but the more i read the more i want to go with an ms4 in my forged shortblock.i'm trying to figure out how much bottom end i'll actually give up, if any,to gain some up top.it's on a 111 and it looks to peak around 6500-6600 so that is not much higher than the v2 on a 112.decisions,decisions.

i know its not as big as some of the cams mentioned but my personal preferance would be an f 13 high lift it drives like a dream and makes good torque all around

I'm running the G5x4 cam in my 99 z28 and really have no major problems. It's not a daily driven car but if I had too it wouldn't be a pain to do. This cam has a very mean lope to it and has a pretty good power range yet. You deffinately will notice a lot more top end with it. You may want to consider possible gearing. Right now i'm running 4.10's.
