Forged 346 good enough??
Alright, I posted about a set of heads to run for a boosted setup a while back. I was aiming for a budget motor/turbo build up. You all talked me into the LS2 shortblock. Well, I got to thinking. Could I just use a built LS1? Looking for 650-700ish hp and 10s all day. I know I would need forged pistons, crank, arp everything, and a good set of heads and intake setup. I would build the LS1 in my car and use a motorcycle as transportation until the build was done. Is there a turbo kit out there that can get the hp levels I am wanting, and here's the killer-while keeping the AC?? The car is a DD and I would like to keep as much comfort as possible. If not 700ish, what power levels/times are people seeing with boosted LS1s? Just trying to do it with budget in mind-thanks.

Your stock crank is good to go on the LS1. You can get a procharger or a RMCR kit and make the power you want. Speed INC has a turbo kit coming out. I just dont know the ETA.

My buddy is making 742rwhp/655rwtq at 6200rpm with his DS1 Procharged Vette on a 346 with stock crank, eagle rods, diamond pistons, mild port job on stock heads, Meth inj, and 14psi of boost. He has 4000+ hard miles on it and no problems...It would have made more if he would have spun the engine up to 6800rpm...

742/655? Awesome, but if you run a decently sized turbo, you'd be seeing 742/770 or something (a much nicer curve)... at slightly lower boost, too (p. loss).
Any reason why you'd give up going with a turbo other than the obvious frustrations (price, PITA, etc)?

Ok guys, so it looks like I should start getting a parts list together for the actual motor build. I will worry about the turbo kit/parts once the motor is built. I will buy a used LS1 shortblock and rebuild it with the right parts to minimize downtime of my vehicle. Is there a twin turbo kit that allows you to keep the AC or is a single turbo kit the only way to keep the AC? Help me add some parts to this list:
Basic rebuild of the shortblock-honed, decked, etc etc
Diamond forged pistons-what size/-cc/etc?
ARP rod bolts-do I need to get Eagle or some other brand of rods as well??
60# fuel injectors and Walbro 255 pump-is this enough, or would you reccomend something else?
LS6 intake manifold
TSP CNC LS6 heads-should I go with Patriot or TSP 6.0L heads or an aftermarket 225 casting??
Upgraded valvetrain-hardened pushrods, double roller timing chain (could I use an LS2 timing chain??) dual springs, titanium retainers, keepers, etc
What type of oiling system will I need? Will a ported LS6 pump be enough
What cam would be ideal for a turbo setup?
What type of PCM-is BS3 overkill?
What compression ratio should I be shooting for? How can I figure my compression ratio with the heads/cam I will be running?
bboyferal, I looked over your post and appreciate it. However, it seems you have already setup your motor for some kind of boost and are just upgrading. I need to get the basics out of the way. I'll keep searching on here but would love to get some feedback in this post as well.
And again, I would like to go TT if there is a kit that allows you to keep the AC. If not, I can run a single turbo. I would like to stay with a turbo as opposed to a SC. So, help me out with my parts list for the motor build and once the motor is underway I will begin researching my best option for boost. Thanks guys.

Some have gone near 800 rwhp with the stock PCM and 346. BS3 is a pretty penny... Worth every dollar, I'm sure... But something to examine a little closely,

I won't forget about the drivetrain but I will cross that bridge when I come to it. I have a NEW gm 10 bolt (yes, I am kicking myself for not dishing out the $1000 more for a 12 bolt) and I have not decided on what tranny to use.
Could a few of you guys answer a few of those questions I had above in the parts list. I'll go back and bolt them so they are easy to see since they are in the middle of the parts list. Thanks again,
Mitchell
