Default Whats involved in forging an LS1? in garage...possible?

Well doing an STS kit this winter and wondering if i got the necessary parts to forge my motor, pistons rods, etc, how hard it would be? This would be with the assistance of a mechanic. I know motor has to be pulled but im jsut curious whats involved in installing the new items, what tools are needed, etc. Can it be done? Very easy to screw up? Thanks!

I would just buy a used LS1 shortblock and have a basic cleanup done on the block, crank, etc. Then, build it up in your garage with forged pistons, connecting rods, rod bolts, etc etc. You could still drive your car while building the motor and the downtime of your car will only be the time it takes you to swap the motor in. There are several 346 build ups over in the Forced Induction section that could give you an idea of what parts you need to use. Good luck brother, I'm right there with ya!

thanks, i will probably end up getting a forged long block down the road as i dont have heads or a cam yet either, just seeing what was really involved in doing it your self to a current block. Thanks for the info!

I'd get just the shortblock. You will save you a lotta money and can build it to your specs.
